A come-from-behind win Thursday kept the Kingfisher softball team in the hunt for a conference championship.

The Lady Jackets scored two runs in the fifth inning to take a lead they wouldn’t lose in a 4-3 victory over Chisholm.

It was the final home game for a trio of seniors, all of whom were pivotal in the victory.

Mia Farrell reached on an error and Kaycee Karcher singled - both with two outs - to keep Kingfisher’s inning alive in the fifth.

Sophomore Natalie Dick’s single drove home Farrell to tie the game.

Then senior Olivia Wilcox knocked in Karcher with her own single for the go-ahead run.

Wilcox gave up a single to start the sixth inning, but retired six straight batters to give KHS its 23rd win of the season.

“Chisholm has always been somewhat of a rival, so winning our last home game against them made it that much sweeter,” Wilcox said.

The win gave KHS a 5-1 record in the Tri-County Conference.

Chisholm was unbeaten in conference play entering the game and still has matchups left with Fairview and Ringwood.

Pioneer had just one conference loss at press time. The Lady Mustangs beat Kingfisher, but lost to Chisholm.

KHS coach Danny Green said a review of conference bylaws after Thursday’s win projected the Lady Jackets would win the tie-breaker if all three teams finish with one conference loss.

“It was a big win for us in more ways than one,” Green said.

Chisholm got out of the gate quickly as the Lady Longhorns got back-to-back RBI hits from Emma Marlatt and Brittan Crabtree to stake a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Jackets got one back in the bottom half when Farrell got on base then was driven home by Karcher’s single.

Brittany Willson’s double in the second sent Emma Lukasek home to tie the game at 2-2.

The tie didn’t last long as Crabtree doubled in the top of the third to send home Maegan Jackson to give Chisholm a one-run advantage.

“I think the first couple innings were a little nerve wracking for all of us knowing that it was our last home game, but once we settled in we really played a solid game,” Wilcox said.

Crabtree’s hit was the fifth of the game for Chisholm, but Wilcox soon got stingy.

She retired 13 of the next 14 batters, including retiring the side in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.

The right-hander struck out the side in the seventh inning and a total of eight in the game while just walking one. Wilcox surrendered six hits total.

KHS had seven hits off Marlatt.

Dick and Karcher were both 2 for 3 with an RBI each. Karcher scored once and Farrell twice.

KHS was 23-13 after the win with a visit to Clinton on Monday looming to close out the regular season. Chisholm, which beat KHS 3-0 on Aug. 20, dropped to 26-4.

“Going into that game, we knew we had to play our best to pull it off and I think that’s exactly what we did,” Wilcox said. “Us seniors gave our all to that game and the other girls did as well.

“It will definitely be one for us to remember for years to come.”

The Lady Jackets are likely looking at a sixth-place finish in District 4A-1.

Their district season came to a close with back-to-back losses Monday in a double-header at Perkins.

KHS is 4-8 in district games.

Wilcox struck out 13 last Friday in Kingfisher’s 8-1 conference win at Ringwood.

The Lady Jackets trailed 1-0 after three innings, but scored all eight runs over the next three.

Wilcox drove in three of those runs and scored twice.

Jodie Hill also had an RBI while Farrell scored twice.

The team claimed a 13-4 victory Tuesday at Kremlin-Hillsdale.

KHS broke open a close game with an eight-run sixth inning.

Mills’ RBI single in the top of the third gave Kingfisher the lead for good.

In the sixth, Mya Dewberry and Farrell both hit two-run doubles.
