Pirates are Cyril deal
Okarche falls to eventual champ in semis
Things started out bad for Okarche last Friday and progressively got worse.
Eventually, it led to the end of the Warriors’ season as they were dealt an 80-55 defeat by No. 6 Cyril in the Class A semifinals at State Fair Arena.
Cyril went on to beat No. 1 Ft. Cobb-Broxton, 57-52, Saturday to claim its first state championship since 1938.
What separated Cyril from the Mustangs as well as Okarche in the semifinals and Frontier in the quarterfinals was its scoring depth.
Cyril got double-figure scoring from four different players and shot 59.3 percent from the field against the Warriors. That included making half of its 22 3-point attempts.
That allowed Cyril to quickly jump on top 6-0, forcing an Okarche timeout.
The lead was nine when Okarche called its second timeout at 3:12 of the first quarter and then 23-9 by the end of the frame.
The Warriors hung in there, but never made a serious threat to come back.
Cyril outscored Okarche 33-15 from 3-point range and had 23 assists to just nine for the Warriors.
Okarche was led by Kalen McCarthy’s 11 points. He made both of his 3-point attempts, but the rest of the team was 3 of 18.
Kaleb Harris added eight points and Cris Avila seven.
Avila struggled shooting all night (3 of 13 overall), but did lead the team with six assists.
Meanwhile, Cyril was led by Jakobie Kaesemeyer’s 20 points and nine rebounds. He was 3 of 5 from long range.
Ryan Hart made five of his nine 3-point attempts and scored 17. Jose Rivera added another 15.
Cason McLemore, Cyril’s leading scorer and the eventual tournament MVP, took just five shots and scored 10 points.
Cyril’s win Saturday, its second against the Mustangs in three games this season, ended Ft. Cobb-Broxton’s bid to become the first team to win five state championships in a row.
Okarche saw its season end with a 25-6 record.
