Raiders don’t look past Dover in Class B district
Coach Justin Edsall was hopeful his Lomega boys team would take Dover seriously in their Class B district championship.
The Raiders opened the seasonwitha36-point win over the Longhorns, but Edsall knew this was a different Dover team visiting on Friday.
“I think they’re playing as good as I’ve seen them in several years,” Edsall said as he watched the Longhorns win their district opener over Agra on Thursday.
“This isn’t the same team we played in November and I’ve got to make sure our guys realize that.”
Apparently they did.
The Raiders raced out of the gate and never looked back in a 77-32 victory to claim the district title and move into this week’s regional in the winner’s bracket.
“I thought we started really well defensively and that was the key,” Edsall said.
Lomega held Dover to four first-quarter points in building a 19-point lead.
The Longhorns had just one field goal early while five different Raiders were able to knock down a bucket in the first eight minutes.
Noah Snowden had three field goals and eight points early. Blake Snowden knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and Dion Fisher scored four points.
The barrage continued into the second quarter as the Raiders pushed their lead to 45-15.
Riley Lumpkin poured in 10 points and Fisher added six more to his total.
Meanwhile, Lomega’s defense was shutting down Dover’s high-scoring guard Joriaun Caldwell.
The senior was limited to just eight points and no Longhorn reached double figures.
Lomega countered with four players scoring at least 12 points.
Lumpkin led the way with 15 points.
Blake Snowden finished with 14 and Noah Snowden 13.
Fisher ended his afternoon with 12 points.
“It’s good to see us have balanced scoring like that,” Edsall said.
Lomega, ranked fourth in Class B, enters this week’s regional with a 19-3 record.
The Raiders play Wesleyan Christian at 8 p.m. Thursday at Agra in a regional winner’s bracket game.
Dover, 11-10, will play Coyle at 3 p.m. Thursday in Agra in an elimination game.
