A RIVALRY IS RENEWED
Dover tops Raiders in Lomega’s 1st varsity season in 8 years
Dover’s third win of the season - and second straight - came at the expense of another county team as a rivalry was renewed last week.
The Longhorns went on the road last Tuesday to knock off Lomega 14-6.
That win came after Monday’s 12-0 victory at home over Cimarron.
The Longhorns’ win streak was snapped Thursday in a 7-4 loss to Glencoe in the first round of the Mulhall-Orlando Tournament.
Lomega is playing varsity baseball for the first time since 2012. The Raiders fell to 0-3 after the loss and dropped their fourth game of the season Thursday against Fargo/Ft. Supply/ Arnett.
Against Dover, the Raiders fell behind 7-0 after the top of the second inning, but stormed back with six runs in the bottom half.
The Raiders drew three straight walks before Kasen Harviston was able to get the second out of the inning by striking out Austin Chestnut, but not before Traver Duffy scored on a passed ball.
Two more walks, the second of which scored a run, set up a bases-clearing double by Blake Yost.
Yost eventually scored on a passed ball before Harviston was able to get out of the inning with the one-run lead.
Dover built up another cushion with a four-run third.
Orlando Lozano, Joriaun Caldwell and Lance Dunigan had consecutive RBI singles before an Eduardo Gamez groundout scored another run.
The Longhorns tacked on two more runs in the fourth and one in the fifth and final inning of the runrule victory.
Yost and Duffy had Lomega’s hits.
Caldwell, Gamez, Harviston and Damion Turner had two hits apiece for Dover.
Harviston pitched three innings for the win. Although he walked six, he struck out seven batters. Five of the six runs he gave up were earned.
Turner threw the last two innings and didn’t give up a hit. He overcame two walks with five strikeouts.
Kade Shaloy pitched all five innings for the Raiders. He struck out six and walked five while giving up 12 hits.
Gamez went the distance in Dover’s three-inning win on Monday. He gave up just one hit and struck out four batters.
Dunigan and Harviston had two hits apiece.
Harviston was joined by Caldwell and Valles in driving home two runs each.
