Snowden is MVP as Lomega D’s up Fairview
Lomega normally buries foes under a ton of points.
The Lady Raiders claimed another Canton Invitational championship with defense.
After surrendering 17 points in the first quarter of the championship game against Fairview on Saturday, the Lady Raiders put on the clamps in an eventual 48-37 victory.
Fairview had seven field goals in the first quarter and was up by six on Lomega, but managed just five field goals the rest of the game.
A 14-4 spurt by Lomega in the second quarter gave the Lady Raiders the lead for good.
Hadley Ott made two treys during that stretch and had three in the game.
She finished with 11 points and made the all-tournament team along with Aliana Lawson, who scored 6.
MVP honors went to sophomore Reagan Snowden, who scored in every quarter, including 5 in the fourth when Lomega closed with a 12-5 run.
Snowden scored 14 points while senior Paige Wheeler went 8 of 10 from the free throw line to contribute to her 10 points.
Lomega didn’t need a comeback against Laverne in the semifinals as it cruised to the 69-39 victory.
Snowden led all scorers with 21 points.
Lawson chipped in 14 while Ott scored 9, all from 3-point range.
Lomega beat Okeene 67-20 to open the tournament. It ended the three-day stretch with a 9-0 overall record and remains No. 1 in Class B-II.
Lomega boys win 2 of 3, place 3rd
A strong first half helped propel the Lomega Raiders to third place in last week’s Canton Invitational.
Rebounding from a semifi nal loss to Fairview, the Raiders downed Okeene 4837 on Saturday to win their second game in three days.
Lomega outscored the Whippets 31-18 in the first half and rode that lead to the win.
Okeene had no answer for Jaxson Snowden in the first half as he poured in 16 of his game-high 18 points.
He was named to the all-tournament team along with Lance Yost, who scored 13.
Yost had 8 of his points in the second half.
The Raiders opened the tournament with a 58-42 victory over Okeene and then were handed an 8155 loss by Fairview in the semifinals.
The Raiders scored in double digits in all four quarters, but couldn’t keep pace as Fairview had at least 22 points in three different quarters.
Snowden paced Lomega with 15 while Yost scored 14.
Lomega also got 10 points from Traevon Smith-Dunn.
