A balanced scoring attack allowed the Hennessey Eagles to enter the holiday break on a high note.

Four Eagles scored in double figures Tuesday as they came home from Newkirk with a 64-43 victory.

Hennessey is 2-4 entering the break and returns Jan. 6 with a game at Crescent.

Hagen Copeland and Freddy Meraz got Hennessey started quickly as they combined for 14 points in the first quarter when Hennessey got out to a 16-9 lead.

Newkirk kept it within single digits for the remainder of the half, but the visitors put the game away with a 22-10 run in the third.

Five different Eagles - Copeland, Meraz, Beau Vinson, Brytan Gardner and Ryker Painter - all scored at least 4 points in that quarter.

Painter added 6 more in the third and finished with all 10 of his points in the second half.

Copeland led the team with 16, which included 12 in the first half.

Vinson poured in 14 for the Eagles while Meraz ended his night with 13.

Lady Eagles still unbeaten

Hennessey will carry a spotless record into the holiday break after Tuesday night’s 50-28 victory at Newkirk.

The Lady Eagles are now 6-0 and ranked 12th in Class 3A.

Like the previous five victories, this one was led by the defense.

The Lady Eagles only allowed double-digit scoring in one quarter. That was the third after Hennessey had already built up a 2313 lead.

Newkirk found some scoring - briefly - in the third with a trio of 3-pointers and doubled its output from the first half.

But Hennessey actually extended its lead by a point thanks to 8 points from Clare Munroe and two treys by Jocelyn Roman.

The Lady Eagles then closed the game on a 13-2 run.

Newkirk had no answer for Munroe as she poured in a game-high 29 points. She had at least two field goals in every quarter.

Roman ended the night with 10 points.

The loss was just the second of the year for Newkirk.

Hennessey has also handed Seiling its lone loss of the season.

Only one foe - Mooreland - has eclipsed the 30-point mark and that was only by a point.

Hennessey returns to action Jan. 6 at Crescent in a Three Rivers Conference game.
