Dover junior Sam Wood officially punched his ticket to the Class 2A state golf tournament, but had to sweat it out as other golfers finished up their second round.

Wood followed his opening-round 75 with a 76 at Idabel Country Club early Wednesday evening to finish at 11-over-par 151 for the day.

The top three individuals from non-qualifying teams also move on to state. Quinton’s Blazyn McKee (147) and Kutter Gideon (149) had the first two of those spots locked up.

Wood was sitting in fifth overall and had the third and final spot in his grasp, but other golfers were within striking distance to catch or surpass Wood in their final holes.

Most notable was Red Oak’s Landon Allen, who was tied with Wood at 11-over entering his 36th and final hole of the day.

Allen, though, hit one of his shots in the water and ended up double-bogeying to finish at 153 for the tournament.

Wood becomes Dover’s first-ever state qualifi er in golf. The 2A state tournament will be Monday (36 holes) and Tuesday (18 holes) at Oakwood Country Club in Enid.
