Wrestlers vie for state spots this weekend

Kingfisher and Cashion will send wrestlers to regional tournaments this weekend with hopes of being able to qualify for state.

Regionals for all classifications are Friday and Saturday.

Kingfisher will compete in a 4A regional at Tuttle.

Cashion will be taking part in the 3A regional at Geary.

The top-five placers in each weight class will advance to the following weekend’s state tournament at State Fair Arena.

Fourth- and fifth-place wrestlers will take part in a “wrestle-in” match at state with the winner advancing to the main bracket.

The first session of each regional will begin at 11 a.m. Friday and will include first-round and quarterfinal matches as well as the first round of consolation matches.

The second session is at 5 p.m. Friday and will feature championship semifinals as well as second-round consolation matches.

Action resumes at 11 am. Saturday with consolation quarterfinal and semifinal matches.

That sets up the final session, which is at 4 p.m. Saturday.

That will feature the championship and consolation finals.

Senior Blake Neal is Kingfisher’s only returning state qualifier.

Neal was fourth at 182 pounds in a 3A regional last season.

He’s competing at 184 pounds this season.

Following are the teams that will compete in the regionals featuring KHS and Cashion:

Class 4A at Tuttle - Blanchard, Cache, Chickasha, Clinton, Douglass, Elgin, Elk City, Harrah, Heritage Hall, Kingfisher, Madill, McLain, Newcastle, Tecumseh, Tuttle, Weatherford

Class 3A at Geary - Anadarko, Berryhill, Bethel, Blackwell, Bridge Creek, Cashion, Chandler, Comanche, Community Christian, Cordell, Crossings Christian, Davis, Geary, Hinton, Lexington, Little Axe, Mangum, Marlow, Millwood, Newkirk, Oklahoma Christian School, Pauls Valley, Plainview, Star Spencer, Sulphur, Tonkawa, Watonga
