Wrestlers win silver bracket at Newkirk
A 66-18 victory over Hennessey allowed Kingfi sher High School to bring home the silver bracket championship from last weekend’s Newkirk Dual Tournament.
After both teams went through the first round of pool duals, the Jackets and Eagles were placed in opposite pools in the silver bracket.
Hennessey thumped Ponca City JV 54-18 and then edged Morrison 47-36 to earn a spot in the bracket finals.
KHS made its way there with wins of 48-34 over Altamont-Labette County of Kansas and then 60-18 against Newkirk.
The Eagles’ Mauricio Gonzalez pinned Dexter Fletcher of Kingfisher in the second period of their 132-pound match and Jameson Ladwig got a fall over Camden Weinmeister at 175.
That gave the Eagles their two wins on the mat as they got their other six points with a forfeit for Tyson McNeely at 106.
Kingfisher followed that with forfeit wins for Noah Bradford at 113 and Kaden Willms at 120.
In the first contested match, the Jackets’ Maliki Haynes pinned Rogan Choate in 26 seconds at 126.
After Gonzalez followed that with his win, Kingfisher rattled off 30 consecutive points.
Karson Taylor and Chance Dunn earned falls at 138 and 144 pounds, respectively.
Abe Prieto and Cooper Richardson did the same at 157 and 165 pounds while Kingfisher’s Chase Price also got a forfeit at 150.
Ladwig ended that run, but Kingfisher concluded the dual with three straight falls: Andrew Takape at 190, TJ Washington at 215 and Erik Rojo at 285.
Kingfisher was part of Pool A to open the tournament and placed fourth with a 1-3 record.
The Jackets narrowly lost to Richardson (Texas) 34-33 and Cleveland, 39-34, and was handled by 6A’s Ponca City, 60-24.
The Jackets’ win was 6021 over Morrison.
Hennessey was fourth in Pool B.
It defeated Ponca City JV 54-15.
Losses were to Newkirk (36-30), Dumas (Texas) (60-21) and Victory Christian (74-5).
