County calls for election to extend sales tax
Kingfisher County commissioners Monday called a special election for Nov. 18 on renewing the county’s half-cent sales tax for five years.
The proposal, if approved, will finance the community services as follows:
• Resurfacing roads, 19%; • Rural Fire Departments, 15%;
• Extension Service and 4-H, 7%;
• Free fair, 3%;
• The Chisholm (formerly Chisholm Trail Museum), 5%;
• Hennessey and Kingfi sher libraries, 3%; General County government services to be financed by the tax include:
• County sheriff, 10%;
• County 911, 9%;
• General government, 7%, and,
• Jail trust authority, 22%.
The resolution calls for all county polling places to be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Nov. 18 with the tax to be in effect for five years after Feb. 1, 2026.
Approval of the tax extension will require a “yes” vote of a majority of registered voters.
Commissioners approved a change in the Big Four Fire Department, naming Lakota Bullard as fire chief and requesting officer, replacing Joseph Maschino, removing Bullard as the department’s receiving officer and adding Curtis English as receiving officer.
Bullard and English attended the early portion of the meeting.
A District 1 suit against Michael and Pat Barrackman regarding right-ofway on the new Robberts Avenue Bridge over Uncle John Creek was settled with the payment of $14,010 to the property owners and a fee of $480 to the law firm of Durbin, Larimore and Bialick, which represented the county in the case.
A new requesting officer for District 1, Marvin Savage, received approval, succeeding Joel Counts.
Other actions approved by the board included:
• A change order on the District 1 overlay project;
• Granting right-of-way to Blake Production Co. for a four-inch gas line in District 2. The location of the pipeline crossing is seven miles south, two miles east and one-quarter mile north from the U.S 81-S.H.51 intersection in Hennessey,
• Approval of the minutes for the regular meeting of the board on Sept. 8 along with payroll for Sept. 15, the sheriff’s department monthly report and appropriations and transfers for August.
Circuit Engineering District 8 will be in the county Wednesday for final action on the Dover-Crescent Road paving project, District 2 commissioner Mike Sparks reported.
Board chairman Anthony Schwarz will take part in the county excise-equalization board meeting Wednesday and County Engineer Nik Smith reminded of the quarterly road safety meeting for all districts on Thursday.
All commissioners – Schwarz, District 3; Jeff Moss, District 1, and Sparks, District 2 – were present for the meeting, along with Smith, County Clerk Emily Lee as official minute clerk, Sheriff Aaron Pitts, citizen visitor Kelly Buck and Bullard and English of Big Four Fire Department.
