GAS FIRE – There was a reported fire Sunday at the Mustang Gas Plant south of Hennessey that shut down trafffic on U.S. Highway 81 in both directions for about an hour. Residents who live within one-quarter mile of the plant were also encouraged to evac

Cause of a non-injury fire Sunday morning at the Mustang Gas Plant two miles south of Hennessey had not been made public as of Tuesday morning.

The fire was reported at about 10 a.m.

An on-site employee was able to shut down the gas and avoid injury, Ben Olszewski, safety director for Mustang Fuel Corporation in Oklahoma City, told the media.

According to a report from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, those living within one-quarter mile of the plant were encouraged to evacuate.

“We wanted to get the valve closed off from the rest of the pipeline,” Hennessey Fire Chief Brandon Scott told the KT&FP. “A drone was used to make sure we could get to the end of the plant safely and shut the valve down.”

Two Hennessey firefi ghters went with a Mus- tang employee so they’d have a back-up if there was a problem, Scott said.

The incident closed traffi c on U.S. Highway 81 in both directions from County Road E640 to E660 for more than an hour.

CRE650 was also shut down in both directions during that time.

Kingfisher County District 2 road graders blocked traffic at the county road intersections and the OHP and Kingfisher County Sheriff’s Office did the same on U.S. 81.

Although they weren’t needed, the fire chief said he had Enid HAZMAT on standby, Hitchcock had a foam trailer and Dover and Loyal were en route with tankers.

The chief said there were 15 Hennessey volunteer firefighters and new recruits who worked the Sunday morning fire.

Firefighters were Assistant Chief James Matousek, Jake Streck, Levi Copeland, Cris Pribyl, Randy Bohnstedt, Kyle Keeton, Dustin Grellner, Logan Macy, Dustin Munroe and Jaylen Goff. The five recruits there were Luis Lara, Sergio Gomez, Matthew Bruner, C.W. Daniel and Skylar McCall.

None of the occupants in the area went to the fire station for safety, Scott said.

“But our wives were there with hot coffee for them if they’d gone to the station,” the chief added.
