Chapter 29: Your Invitation to Join Us
Journal Date: Dec. 12, 2021
I Googled non-profit attorneys in Washington, D.C., and Tenenbaum and Associates was the firm that popped up.
I called, they answered and assured me of several things. They assured me they
They assured me they were not intimidated by what we were doing and they were experts in the field of non-profits doing political advocacy. And since they only
And since they only worked for non-profits, not the politicians themselves, they were happy to help us.
We signed a letter of engagement with them based on their standard rate to non-profits, $560/hour. Just what we needed, but certainly not cheap.
We were on our way to our next chapter, a new approach and an entirely different legal entity.
This time we would be a 501(c)(4) organization. The National Rifle Association (NRA) would be another example of a 501(c)(4). The rules would be
The rules would be different. We would be allowed to
We would be allowed to directly attempt to influence elections. The tax rule allows 50% of our budget to be used on elections and campaigns; the other 50% would have to be dedicated to education.
Those are the rules. Can’t change them. Have to work within them.
We began our story five years ago in late 2016 and we have now caught up to current times, late 2021.
Our story, which is a citizen’s attempt to reform our nation’s congress using God’s power and Tom Coburn’s influence, continues in 2022, but the telling of it in this format pauses for now.
Let me attempt to summarize two things: What we have learned to date and what we plan to do from here forward.
Here is a summarization of the top 10 things Tom Coburn taught me prior for our effort’s beginning in either his book or his words.
1) The country is destined to fail due to its debt unless drastic measures are taken.
2) The problem is not a matter of politics, that is Democrats or Republicans. Our debt is a moral problem. The problem is human greed.
3) Our congress members routinely put their selfish desire for re-election before our nation’s best interest. This is wrong, immoral and corrupt. Our congress members take an oath to serve our nation, not their constituents, and when they place their desire for re-election above our nation’s needs, they are betraying their oath and corrupting themselves.
4) The problem has become so bad that we cannot hope to simply elect better people and expect true reform. The system itself is broke. The people themselves are in charge due to our constitution and the people themselves must retake control of our nation.
5) Due to the power of our constitution, the American people themselves can retake control if they simply will.
6) The only language politicians understand is leverage.
7) It is principles not politics that are unchanging and truly important.
8) Our founders were very special men who sacrificed bravely and boldly for our nation, our principles and our freedom. Tom Coburn was this kind of man.
9) There is a well-established historical cycle of democracy that should frighten us all into action. It goes like this: Bondage leads to religious conviction, religious conviction leads to freedom, freedom leads to prosperity, prosperity leads to complacency and complacency leads back to bondage. America certainly appears to be squarely in the complacency phase.
10) Tom Coburn and most of our founders were strong Christians who worked to serve our nation with God front and center. They served with the commands of Jesus in their hearts.
Next follows a summation of the top 10 things we have learned since the beginning of the Unity above Self in America effort:
1) There are actually still sacrificial leaders in our congress.
2) There was already a simple, bi-partisan plan that has the power to reform our nation’s debt, dysfunction and division. The plan is in the form of the “No Budget, No Pay” act. The plan merely needs the American people to propel it to passage.
3) Congress members at their worst are lying, selfish, small-minded individuals who should be reprimanded and redirected or removed. Not all of them are this way and those who are, are not always this way. But some are always this way and some are sometimes this way, and it is our job to hold them accountable. And they pay attention best when they are facing election.
4) Because of the gift of freedom and the power granted by our constitution, purchased with the blood of our forefathers in America, a determined group of citizens can still make a difference against any problem we face with passion, tenacity and inspiration.
5) When you set out to do something big for the common good of the people in a selfless way, God and His people show up in a big way.
6) When you start leaning on God for help in your battles, suddenly His word comes alive in ways it never has before.
7) When you are feeling overwhelmed by the magnitude of your burden and you realize that it is not your battle but God’s, He gives you peace.
8) When you realize your job is merely to take the battle one day at a time, acting with courage on God’s behalf suddenly you find strength and confidence you never knew you had.
9) When you begin to view people not by their position but by their adherence to the commands of Jesus, you no longer feel intimidated but rather you either feel brotherhood because they embrace His teachings, or you feel strength to stand up to them not as yourself but rather as God’s messenger.
10) And finally, when you realize God’s in control you don’t feel an inclination to do nothing, but rather you find the determination to press on.
I thank you for investing your time in reading our story in this manuscript to this point.
I truly believe every investment someone makes through reading the story, watching the video, sending a check, or perhaps most importantly offering a prayer, aids the effort in a very real way.
Remember, our debt is not my problem any more than it is yours; we are in this together.
If you would like to get involved, we welcome that I hope you will choose to invest your time, dollars or prayers.
In deciding where you stand, I encourage you to first take a long hard look at our government, our debt, our division and dysfunction. Then I encourage you to
Then I encourage you to think logically about where you think we are headed. Then consider the lives of American soldiers given so that you and your family can know freedom.
Consider how this will impact your grandchildren.
Lastly, consider the Bible’s instruction.
Let’s break down just one passage from the Bible as an example.
Let’s look at Hebrews 12:1-3.
It begins, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses.”
A cloud of witnesses to me is clearly the souls who have gone before us: Our parents, our grandparents, soldiers who gave their lives, our founding Fathers, the Apostle Paul and Jesus himself, to name a few.
“Let us throw off everything that hinders us and the sin that so easily entangles.” To me this is partisan
To me this is partisanship, selfishness, greed, envy, bias and hate among others.
“And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” To me this is acknowl
To me this is acknowledging that this is the great problem of our time.
The great defining American problem of our time is not the need to establish freedom from England, to defeat the issue of slavery through a Civil War, to defend our way of life and freedom itself in a World War, or lay the foundation to defeat racism in the Civil Rights movement.
No, the great challenge of our time is to prevent self-collapse by embracing sacrifice in a unified and systematic way when debt, division and dysfunction caused by human greed are ruling the day.
“Fixing our eyes upon Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”
To me this tells us that the way to win this battle is by embracing the difficult but powerful commands of Jesus.
Commands like “do not judge others,” “love your enemies” and “seek to serve not to be served.”
Commands that are central to our Christian faith but nowhere to be found in our public discourse.
“For the joy set before Him he endured the cross, scorning its shame and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” To me this is saying that
To me this is saying that there is joy and so many other true, vital and lasting benefits to be gained.
We are to turn away from the worldly practice of grabbing up money, material goods and power and rather embrace the hardship and sacrifice that are needed to reverse our debt, strengthen our nation’s character, reestablish virtue and unite our people. “Consider Him who en
“Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you do not grow weary and lose heart.”
To me this is telling us, in advance, we are to expect opposition from those in power and we are to know it is their sin that leads them to resist our righteous cause.
We are to know in advance there will be trial. Jesus faced so much more trial and sacrificed everything for us.
Our sacrifice won’t be equal to His, but if we will merely remember His sacrifice on our behalf, then we can find the strength required and importantly not grow weary and lose heart.
So, this is our story my fellow American citizens. We shall truly stand
We shall truly stand united together or fall together in despair.
Is the threat real? Are you called to act? Do the sacrifices of Jesus and American soldiers tug at your heart to sacrifice for the greater good in your own way? Is this effort pure enough, righteous enough and powerful enough to warrant your support? Only you can answer
Only you can answer these questions.
And like the choice of your own salvation, while the question is of tremendous importance, you have the freedom to choose to embrace the solution with both its sacrifices and benefits or to ignore the question.
It is yours to decide.
My hope is that you will first embrace Jesus and look for ways to honor and uphold his commands in both your personal life and your life as a U.S. citizen.
May God bless you and may He continue to bless the United States of America.
