Extraordinary efforts bring Superior result
For some, it may have felt as if the Pride of Kingfisher put in decades of work to perfect “Decades of Love.”
It worked…and the Kingfisher High School band members still aren’t done working.
The Pride of Kingfisher wowed judges Wednesday as it earned all 1’s (or superior, the highest rating) in the OSSAA northwest marching band regional at Enid High School.
Band members performed four songs in its “Decades of Love” show. They included “Happy Together,” “Crazy in Love,” “Grenade” and “Hooked on a Feeling.”
The straight superior ratings were the first step in the band’s ultimate goal, which is to earn a Sweepstakes Award from the OSSAA.
The highest achievement a band can earn, the next steps include earning superiors in concert and sight reading at the district and state competitions later this school year.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed watching as our senior class blossomed in their leadership positions,” said Mandy Owens, the band director along with Logan Desmond. “They have worked so hard honing their talents.”
That hard work began in early August as the band practiced four hours a day.
“After school started, band students came to class early every day to learn and polish our marching show,” said Owens.
There were also nighttime practices from 6-8 p.m. every Tuesday at the football field.
“Kingfisher citizens probably heard us practicing,” said Owens.
That’s far from the only task tackled by the band.
The Pride performs at each KHS football game and also plays throughout the games from the stands.
It performed Thursday morning for Heritage Elementary students and then Friday morning for students at Gilmour Elementary.
On Saturday, the Pride took part in the Southwestern Oklahoma State University homecoming parade in Weatherford and then participated in the SWOSU Mass Band for the homecoming game.
With an eye toward that Sweepstakes Award in the future, the band will have a full plate, especially over the next month.
On top of football games, the Pride is preparing for Red Carpet Honor Band auditions, the annual Veterans Day assembly and the annual Christmas concert.
Pride of Kingfisher drum majors this year are Colton Livingston, Tommy Anderman and Angela Muñoz.
Other band members include Shaniya Burpo, Lizzie Hiebert, Terry Ann McCully, Gracie Fuksa, KC Ortega, Emily Munoz, Vanessa Gomez, Rosa Wallace, Amber Lynn Gustafson, Cooper Davis, Gracie Hux, Ashley Delatorre, Lyndsi Moyeda, Chandler Shriver-Johnson and Caleb Johnson.
