Homestead exemption forms no longer mailed

County assessor alert to taxpayers:

By

Kingfisher County residents wanting to file for a homestead exemption will not be getting those forms in the mail, said County Assessor Carrie Turner.

Instead, residents will be receiving a piece of mail from the assessor stating as such and what is needed to file for the exemption.

The homestead exemption is an exemption of $1,000 of the assessed valuation, which can lead to annual savings for a homeowner.

“If you currently have a homestead exemption, it will remain in effect until ownership or occupancy changes,” Turner said. “It is the responsibility of the property owner to notify the county assessor in writing on or before March 15 of the following year of any change in homestead status as well as improvements or removal to property.”

Failuretoreportachange is subject to interest, penalty and forfeiture of homestead exemption for two years (O.S. Title 68, Sec. 2892.6), Turner said.

The county assessor said her office will be mailing out the 901 Business Personal Property Rendition, Individual Personal Property Rendition and the 935 Manufactured Home Rendition forms.

“All taxable personal property - assets as of Jan. 1 - in Oklahoma is required to be rendered to the county assessor between Jan. 1 and March 15 of each year by the owner or person in control of such property,” Turner reminded.

“Property rendered after March 15, but before April 15 shall have a mandatory 10 percent penalty applied. Property rendered after April 15 shall have a 20 percent penalty applied. “ closed, Turner asks those involved to indicate on the Business Personal Property Rendition form and return to her office by March 15.

“This information will prevent our office from assessing a business that has closed,” Turner said.

If a Kingfisher County business does not file, the county assessor is required to prepare an assessment from the best information available in the absence of a return by the taxpayer.

“It is important to me to provide the Oklahoma Tax Commission with the most accurate information possible,” Turner said.

“We are here to help the taxpayer and happy to answer any questions.”

Turner’s office is located in Room 1 at the Kingfisher County Courthouse.

Her office’s phone number is 405-375-3884.
