Longtime newspaper publisher Kenneth Reid, 98, passes away
Longtime newspaper publisher and Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame inductee Kenneth O. Reid passed away Monday.
He was 98. Reid is the brother of Gary Reid, publisher emeritus, and uncle of Barry Reid, publisher of the Kingfisher Times & Free Press.
He was active in the ownership of 10 Oklahoma newspapers before retiring in 1991.
After graduating from the University of Oklahoma in journalism in 1950, he was ad manager at the Claremore Progress for Ed Livermore Sr., Wheeler Mayo and Ed Burchfiel.
In 1953 they bought the Pauls Valley Daily Democrat and he and Burchfiel soon bought the Wewoka Daily Times and Frederick Daily Leader.
In 1962, the Pauls Valley Daily Democrat became Oklahoma’s first offset daily paper.
Reid bought the Weatherford Daily News in 1972, converting it to offset.
He eventually bought the Vinita Daily Journal, the Nowata Star, the Perry Daily Journal, the Sand Springs Leader and Times and was an early partner with Gary Reid in the purchase of the Kingfisher Times & Free Press.
His son, Phillip Reid, now owns Reid Newspapers, Inc., which is the state’s largest newspaper source.
Reared in Greer County, Reid attended Altus Public Schools and served in the infantry in World War II.
He served as district Rotary governor and president of the Oklahoma Press Association.
Reid was inducted into the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame in 2016.
