New KFD design focus of special city meeting

By

Kingfisher city commissioners will hold a special meeting later this week.

The posted agenda lists the meeting as a “workshop” for commissioners.

The lone discussion item is “regarding new fire station design,” according to the posted agenda.

The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, and will be held at the Kingfisher Chamber of Commerce office.

City voters in May 2021 passed a 10-year, half-cent sales tax dubbed by city leaders as the Fire, Infrastructure, Recreation and Emergency (FIRE) Services tax.

The proposition passed by a 159-66 vote, a nearly 71 percent approval rate.

The main push to pass the tax was to build a new fire station to replace the nearly 50-year-old structure currently in use.

In October 2022, then-Kingfisher Mayor Roxie Alexander signed a contract to purchase three acres of land for the new station.

It was the former Glenn Beebe property at 1503 S. Main St.

Rising construction costs later led to debate among city commissioners as to the size of the planned facility.

Commissioners voted 3-2 in July to move forward with a 20,000 square-foot facility projected to cost about $10 million, though projections showed the tax would only generate about $7.5 million.

Thursday’s meeting is open to the public.
