A fire west of Hennessey at about 4 p.m. Saturday was caused by “blown fuses on OG&E lines after a trackhoe two miles away had hit a power line,” Hennessey Fire Chief Brandon Scott told the KT&FP Monday afternoon.

Scott said the fire at the Hawk Farm destroyed 15 acres and 22 hay bales.

“A big thank-you to the Hennessey Fire Department for their quick response before it reached our house,” said Heather Hawk. She’d also noted on Facebook that the wind was from the south that afternoon.

Hawk later told the KT&FP she was also most grateful to her neighbor, Aaron Swart, who called her and asked if they were burning something.

Hawk said she’d only been in Hennessey for about 10 minutes when she got Swart’s call and she asked him to report it.

Then “I was racing back home and needed to call Harold (Barnes, who was in Ada for a roping competition),” Hawk said.

She later said, “I was sure glad I didn’t go with him.”

That farm is located about one mile south of Lacey and one mile east, said the fire chief, who had been at the Oklahoma State University football game that afternoon.

The log shows the fire call came in at 4:07 p.m. on Sept. 21, he said.

Firefighters responding were Assistant Fire Chief James Matousek, Kyle Keeton, Tyson Copeland, Randy Bohnstedt, Jake Streck, Dustin Munroe and Dustin Grellner.

Three of the town’s six firefighter candidates also responded to that fire: C.W. Daniel, Sergio Gomez and Luis Lara.

The other three firefighter candidates are Skylar McCall, Matthew Bruner and Randy Gregory.
