Weatherford’s Reagan Roof to be next KHS head football coach

Kingfisher is expected to name Reagan Roof as its next football coach, the Times & Free Press has confirmed.

The move is pending approval of the Kingfisher Board of Education.

Among the items on Monday’s agenda of the January regular meeting is the hiring of a football coach. Superintendent David Glover said he will recommend Roof.

Roof has spent the last seven seasons as the head coach at Weatherford.

Prior to that, he was the head coach at Bethany High School for nine seasons.

“We are excited to get someone with the pedigree of Coach Roof to continue the success of our football program,” Glover told the Times & Free Press.

“He will be a great addition to both our faculty and the community of Kingfisher.”

Roof informed members of his Weatherford football team of his decision on Thursday morning.

Weatherford was 49-28 during his stint as a head coach.

It was highlighted by an 11-3 record in 2019 in which the Eagles made a run to the Class 4A state championship game where they were defeated by Poteau.

Roof comes from a family of coaches.

His father, Robin, was a football coach for Guthrie, which is where Reagan Roof graduated high school in 1997.

Reagan Roof succeeded Woody Roof when he took over the Weatherford job in 2017.

Woody Roof is Reagan’s second cousin.

Reagan’s brother - Tan-ner Roof - is the head coach at Oklahoma Christian School.

After graduating from Guthrie, Roof earned a bachelor’s degree and then later a master’s from Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

He spent 15 years total at Bethany before making the move to Weatherford.

Roof and his wife, Lindsay, have two children. Their daughter, Reese, is currently a sophomore and their son, River, is a seventh grader at Weatherford.

Roof will succeed Jeff Myers, who was the KHS head coach for 20 seasons.

Myers was 183-68 and KHS reached the playoffs each year under his direction.

That included five appearances in a state championship game and the 2013 Class 3A state title.

Myers was put on administrative leave near the end of the 2023 season after being charged with felony child neglect. (Note: See related story on Page 1.)

As part of a settlement agreement in a civil suit brought against Myers, three other coaches and Kingfisher Public Schools, the district agreed to not renew Myers’ extra-duty contract and to not allow him to coach at Kingfisher again.

The district opened the position for head football coach in the middle of December.
