Sanders captures beauty, national award
9 KHS students recognized for entries
Chalk up more honors for Kingfisher High School’s photography students, this time on a national scale.
Nine students recently accumulated a total of 11 honors in the Photography Society of America (PSA) Youth Showcase.
Among them was Davis Sanders, who received first place in the Projected Architecture category for his photo entitled “Lobby.”
Sanders, who just wrapped up his freshman year at KHS, captured the winning photo while on vacation during a tour of the historic Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, Va.
For earning first place, Sanders will receive a $150 award from PSA, a one-year PSA student membership and a digital subscription to the PSA Journal, which will include Sanders and other first place winners in its September issue.
In addition, Sanders’ image will be included in the Youth Showcase video program at the PSA’s Photo Festival in Portland, Ore., in September.
For the article in the Journal, Sanders was asked to include a statement. It follows: “One of the many reasons I like photography is that I can catch a moment paused in time. I enjoy taking pictures of architecture and landscapes specifically.
“I was on a family vacation when my great-uncle gave us a tour of this magnifi cent hotel and it struck me as this was a picture that I needed to take. The lobby picture which I won my award was one of the most favorite pictures I’ve ever taken.”
Sanders, who is the son of Mike and Nellie Sanders of Kingfisher, also received an “Acceptance” designation for another photo submission entitled “Hotel” in the same category.
Acceptance is the equivalent to honorable mention.
Hayden Green received two such designations in the contest.
One was for his submission of “Old School” in the Color Photographer’s Choice category and the other for “Last Drive” in the Monochrome Photographer’s Choice category.
“Receiving two such awards is exceedingly rare for high school students,” said Dr. A.J. Johnson, who instructs the photography students.
Johnson said he didn’t have the total number of entries for the contests, “but I can tell you that entries came from across the U.S. and as far away as South Africa.”
Others earning Acceptance for their entries were Karen Muñoz, Zoey Sanders, Chase Price, Lillie Hill, Maddux Gomez, Jake Kirtley and Finley Harrison.
