A big lead nearly slipped away Monday, but Kingfisher’s eighth grade basketball team held on to beat Newcastle 39-37 at the APB. The one-possession game appeared headed for a blowout - or at least a comfortable - win for the Jackets in the early stages.

The top seeds in both brackets easily advanced into the semifinal round of the Three Rivers Conference Tournament being hosted this year by Fairview. On the girls’ side, Cashion held Crescent to just two points in the first half before winning 48-17.

Okarche returned to the court last Tuesday for the first time in more than three weeks. And looked the part early. However, the Lady Warriors shrugged off the rust and eventually found their way to a 60-39 win at Cordell. It was their first game since Dec.

The Kingfisher boys basketball team has won multiple state championships, its fair share of invitational tournaments, had major win streaks and sat atop the rankings for the better part of the past fourplus years. But it hadn’t scored 100 points in a game (despite many easy opportunities).

Dover had lost big and won close. One thing it hadn’t done was win big. That was until last Tuesday. The Lady Longhorns dominated Medford on the road to grab a 47-18 victory. Their only other win entering the night was a two-point nail-biter against Coyle.

Riley Lumpkin helped Lomega dominate the second and third quarters last Tuesday to pick up a double-digit road win. The Raiders knocked off Okeene 69-46 in their first game since Dec. 12. The bulk of that advantage came in the middle 16 minutes when the Raiders blistered their hosts 44-17.

Crescent hung in there with 2A’s sixth-ranked team for three quarters and more. The Tigers just couldn’t quite pull off the upset for their first win. Hennessey outscored its guests 11-2 in the fourth quarter Tuesday to pull out a 40-28 Three Rivers Conference win.

Forfeits in the final three weight classes saw the Kingfisher High School wrestling team drop a dual Tuesday at Watonga. The Jackets led by 18 points entering the last four weight classes but eventually dropped a 36-30 decision.

Cashion got a quick tune-up just a couple days before it began defense of its conference championship. The Wildcats returned to the court Tuesday for a 72-49 road win against Oklahoma Bible Academy in Enid. It was Cashion’s first game since Dec. 18.
