KHS softball hits two-game losing skid
Kingfisher’s softball team hit a mini-slump this week.
Coming off their third tournament championship of the season last week, the Lady Jackets dropped their first two games of this week to suffer their first losing streak of the season.
The first was an 8-0 setback to Class 3A power Washington on Tuesday.
The second was a 6-4 loss at defending Class 4A state champ Weatherford on Thursday.
The latter hurt worse as it was a District 4A-3 showdown. It dropped Kingfisher to 2-2 in the district while Weatherford improved to 2-1.
KHS took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Weatherford took it for good in the bottom half of the frame.
Jossalyn Schulz belted a two-run home run to put the Lady Eagles on top.
They got a leadoff homer from Addie Blackwell in the second inning to stake a 3-1 lead.
That hit chased starter Kinlee East from the circle in favor of Kennedy Stewart.
The freshman hit the first two batters she faced, but retired the next three to escape any further damage.
She kept Weatherford’s bats quiet for four innings, but the Lady Eagles woke up again in the sixth.
A pair of singles set up Schulz, who struck again with the long ball, this one for three runs, to give the Lady Eagles a four-run cushion.
Kingfisher tried to claw back in the seventh.
Reese Roof singled and Kendall Farrar reached on an error.
Roof later scored on an error and Farrar was pushed home by an Addison Johnson RBI single.
That brought the tying run to the plate, but Kingfi sher’s rally ended there.
The Lady Jackets had nine hits in the game, three by Roof against her former team.
It was her single in the first that scored Adlee Friesen for the early 1-0 lead.
Roof scored twice. Johnson was 2 for 4 for KHS.
East lasted one inning, gave up three hits and three runs, two of which were earned.
Stewart pitched five innings, surrendered seven hits and three runs.
Freshman Payton Blackburn hushed Kingfi sher’s bats on Washington.
The game wasn’t originally on Kingfisher’s schedule, but the Lady Jackets made the impromptu trip south.
Washington entered and exited with just one loss on the season.
Blackburn held KHS to three hits in the five-inning shutout.
The Warriors scored five runs in the first inning and later got two homers from Ava Salcedo.
Blackburn struck out six Lady Jackets.
Kingfisher’s hits came from Johnson (2) and Shelby Davis.
The losses pushed Kingfi sher’s overall record to 17-4. KHS hosted Clinton Friday after press time of this edition.
