Lady Jackets survive elements at cross country state, win academic state title
KHS GIRLS were named the Class 4A academic state champions in cross country. Team members were recognized during the awards ceremony at last Saturday’s state meet in Shawnee. There were no individual medalists.
There was no team trip to the podium due to race results.
But there was hardware earned.
The Kingfisher High School girls cross country team slipped to eighth place Saturday in the Class 4A state meet held at North Rock Creek in Shawnee.
The Lady Jackets entered state ranked fourth, but scored 227 points, tying Plainview.
Lincoln Christian, as expected, won the state title by scoring only 27 points.
Byng was the state runner-up with 98 points. Still, KHS was the first team recognized during the medal ceremony and for a familiar reason.
The Lady Jackets were announced as the 2025 Class 4A academic state champs.
It was the third straight year for them to win that honor.
Two seniors led KHS on the two-mile course, which proved to be spongy throughout, slippery in spots and muddy in others after several inches of rain the previous two days - and at race time.
Scout Snodgrass placed 20th overall out of 147 competitors in the race.
She was 18th out of runners scoring points for their teams and crossed the finish line of the twomile course in 12:38.1.
Harper Evans crossed in 43rd place (39th) with a time of 13:08.1.
Next came junior Mattie Slezickey, who was 47th (42nd) in 13:12.2.
Addison Price was Kingfisher’s fourth scorer. The junior finished in 13:23.2, good for 57th (51st).
Ryann Farrar’s time of 13:54.6 was good for 91st (77th).
The top five finishers on each team count toward the team score.
However, if there is a tie in team points, the edge goes to the team with the highest-placing sixth runner.
For Kingfisher, that was Hinsley Brodrick, who was 94th overall and 79th among scoring runners.
For Plainview, the sixth place runner was Oliva Potter at 102nd (86th).
That put KHS at eighth and Plainview at ninth.
In fact, two KHS runners finished before Potter as Lily Lunsford pushed across at 14:01.6, placing her 96th overall and 80th among scorers.
