Born in Dane, Okla., to Ralph “Shorty” Russell and Bertha Kile Russell, Anna Mae Steen passed peacefully at home on Oct. 16, 2025.

Anna Mae grew up in Kingfisher, where she graduated from high school in 1949. She later moved to Bethany and attended business school.

On Sept. 3, 1954, she married John Steen. Together they made their home in Kingfisher and raised four daughters.

Known affectionately as “Rabbit” by her brothers, the nickname stayed with her throughout her life.

She was the middle child in a large family with one older sister, two older brothers and three younger brothers, later joined by a half-brother and half-sister.

After John retired, Anna Mae and he moved to Crescent. Following John’s passing in 2016, she moved to Oklahoma City, where she lived until her death.

Rabbit loved her family deeply and was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother – or, as her great-granddaughter Zorie Kate lovingly called her, “Grandma Bunny.”

She was preceded in death by her parents, Shorty and Bertha Russell; sister, June Hansen; brothers, R.D., Roy “Jack,” Richard, Robert and Elmer Russell; husband, John Steen; daughter, Laura Steen; and son-in-law, Walter Murphy.

She is survived by her daughters Jana Sue Cowherd, Carolyn Murphy and Donna Steen; son-in-law Kim Cowherd; grandchildren Kyle Cowherd, Jordan Cowherd, Madison Murphy and John Casey Murphy; great-grandchildren Zorie Kate and Archer Alan Cowherd; brother Jerry Russell and sister Dixie Turner.

She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Mary Jo, Bonnie, LaMae and Mona, along with many nieces, nephews and great- and great-great-nieces and greatgreat- nephews.

Rabbit – our Mom, Grandma and Grandma Bunny – will be remembered for her gentle heart, quick wit and unwavering love for her family.

Graveside services were held at Kingfisher Cemetery on Monday, Oct. 27.
