Second-quarter surge helps Lomega put away Calumet

There was a brief moment when it appeared Calumet might let Lomega run away with the game early.

Then it appeared the Lady Chieftains found their legs and even offered the slightest of hope they might be able to pull off an upset.

That came at 4:20 of the second quarter when freshman Hayden Mayfield’s 3-pointer gave Calumet a 22-20 lead.

It would be the last one. Lomega rattled off 26 unanswered points in a run that lasted into the third quarter in an eventual 7559 victory.

The win improved the Lady Raiders to 4-0.

After Mayfield’s trey, Lomega outscored Calumet 21-0 the rest of the half.

The run started with a free throw by Reagan Snowden and she proved to just be heating up.

The sophomore rattled off 10 points during that stretch and finished the game with 21.

Hadley Ott started the scoring in the second half with a 3-pointer as Lomega’s run continued.

Not until Lila Winegeart made a 3-pointer at 6:42 of the third did Calumet stop the run.

But the damage was done.

The Lady Chieftains kept pace the rest of the game, but never threatened a comeback.

Winegeart scored 21 to lead Calumet while Mayfi eld poured in 19.

Ott’s trey in the third was her fourth of the game. She would add two more and finish her night with 20.

Lomega also got 11 points from Paige Wheeler, eight from Bree Yost and six from Jenny Penaran.

The game was tied 2-2 early before Ott nailed back-to-back 3-pointers as Lomega rattled off a run.

Calumet recovered and actually led 15-14 after the first stanza.

The teams went backand- forth in the second until Mayfield’s 3-pointer led to Lomega’s decisive stretch.

The loss was Calumet’s first of the season as it dropped to 2-1.
