Sheppard 5th at Cushing; Crum 1 of 3 placers at Western

In perhaps the toughest tournament in the state last weekend, the Kingfisher High School boys wrestling team notched 51.5 points.

That was good for a modest 21st place out of 37 teams at the Cushing Tiger Invitational.

The tournament was won by Allen (Texas), the largest high school in Texas that has won 15 of the last 16 Class 6A state titles in that state.

The Eagles accumulated 296.5 points and had Blackwell right on their tails with 289.5.

Chickasha was third with 183.

The Jackets’ lone placer was Jaxon Sheppard.

The junior took fifth at 138 pounds and accounted for 18 team points.

He won his first two matches by getting a 9-0 major decision over Watonga’s Brayson Gordon and a 7-4 decision over Sulphur’s Landy Dearman.

Sheppard ran into Allen’s Cayden Rios in the quarterfinals and was pinned at 1:50.

Sheppard advanced through the next two rounds of consolation - on via injury default and the other by pinning Wagoner’s Collin Moore in 2:32 - before losing to Skiatook’s Jagen Jones in the first period.

That landed Sheppard in the fifth-place match where he edged Mathew Moore of Berryhill 7-4.

Eric Rojo grabbed 10 team points at heavyweight.

After losing in the second round, Rojo picked up two pins in the consolation bracket before being eliminated.

He finished 3-2 at the tournament.

TJ Washington managed eight points at 215 pounds with his 2-2 mark. He was also eliminated in the fourth round of consolation.

Chase Price earned 6.5 team points at 150. He was also 2-2 and he made it to the third round of the consolation bracket.

Brayden Kochenower reached the fifth round of consolations at 144 before being pinned. Kochenower was 2-2 and scored six points.

KHS Girls Battle Western Conference Field Cattie Crum’s runner- up finish led Kingfisher High School’s girls wrestling team at the Western Conference Tournament.

Crum reached the finals of the 145-pound bracket in the tournament held Monday at Weatherford.

She downed Sophia Crownover 12-5 in the semifinals before losing to Braylnn Traster of Pawnee in the championship.

Crum notched 16 of Kingfisher’s 40 team points, which placed the Lady Jackets ninth overall.

Harrah won the conference crown with 157 while Cache was the runner-up with 151.

Tylar Prim was fourth at 125 pounds and scored 13 team points.

She pinned Celica Agurrie of Watonga in the quarterfi nal before losing in the semis. Prim got a fall in the consolation semifinals against Addysen Compton of Hinton, but lost her third-place match.

Erika Price also reached the third-place match as she produced 11 team points at 110 pounds.

After losing in her quarterfi nal, Price won a pair of consolation matches with first-period pins before dropping her final match.

Kingfisher’s junior high girls placed fourth with 79.5 points.

Three KJH girls reached their respective championship matches, led by Brailyn Schroeder, who won the 110-pound title.

She was responsible for 33.5 of the team’s points.

Kingfisher’s Sophie Ellis was the runner-up at 102 and Sydney Snyder at 110.
