Spoiler alert
Perkins plays that role as late bucket downs Jackets in semis
Tyce Slusser and Perkins- Tryon spoiled Kingfi sher’s hopes of a championship double dip.
Slusser scored with 3.8 seconds to play Thursday night to lift the 13thranked Demons to a 59-57 upset of No. 10 Kingfisher in the boys semifinals of the Buckle of the Wheatbelt Invitational.
The win sends Perkins into the championship game against top-seeded Weatherford at 8 p.m. Wednesday. KHS will take on Woodward in the thirdplace game at 5 p.m.
Slusser ended the backand- forth second half with his heroics, capping a 22-point night that saw him score 15 in the second half.
It came moments after Cash Laird had tied the game at 57-all with a stepback 3-pointer.
After a timeout, the Demons got the ball into Slusser, who the Jackets had trouble staying in front of all night.
The shifty guard walked it to half court, then sped toward the basket, spun off of Laird and laid it off the glass.
Kingfisher had spent its last timeout after Laird’s 3-pointer, so Collin Farrar could only fling a desperation shot from 75 feet that fell short.
The Jackets were in it to the end despite playing much of the game without one of their leading scorers, Hayes White.
The senior left the game after scoring on a driving layup in which he was fouled in the first quarter. His head bounced off the APB hardwood and, after slowly walking off the court, he didn’t return.
Kingfisher saw another one of its leaders - Michael Easley - fight foul trouble much of the first half while yet another - Laird - didn’t have a field goal in the first two quarters.
Senior Jackson Willbanks helped fill the void with 7 first-half points, including a 3-pointer at the end of the half to tie it at 32-32 after the Jackets had trailed by as many as 7.
The teams went back and forth in the third as Laird began to find his offense with 7 points.
But so did Slusser, who also had first-half foul trouble. He scored 11 in the third and the teams entered the fourth tied at 48-48.
The Jackets led 5450 on Farrar’s end-toend bucket with 3:10 to play, but Perkins scored 5 straight to reclaim the lead with 2:00 left.
The Demons made it 57-54 on an inbounds play that saw Zane Payton score in the lane with 37 seconds remaining, which set up Laird’s last 3-pointer.
Laird scored 12 of his 14 in the second half.
Easley finished his night with 10 and Willbanks chipped in 9.
Arik Luke and Croston Martin both scored 7 while White had 6 before being injured.
The Jackets dropped to 12-4 while Perkins moved to 13-2.
Sixth-ranked Weatherford beat Woodward, the tournament’s defending champ, 64-39 in the other boys semifinal.
