Wrestling royalty crowned
Perry dominated the largest weight classes to earn a dual comeback win Tuesday and spoil Kingfisher High School’s wrestling homecoming.
The Maroons got three falls and a tech fall in the final four matches to turn what was a 13-point deficit into a 41-31 victory over the Jackets at Heritage Gym.
Camden Weinmeister pinned Perry’s Riley Schlegel in the first period of their 165-pound match for Kingfisher’s fourth straight win in the dual.
The streak was started by senior Brayden Kochenower, who got a second period pin against Kaden Beier at 144 pounds.
The Jackets trailed by nine entering that match, but the senior pulled his team within 18-15.
Chance Dunn put Kingfisher on top as he out-classed Jett Kennedy and earned a 10-2 major decision at 150 pounds.
That was followed by Abe Prieto’s pin against Hunter Miner at 157, which was followed by Weinmeister’s win.
The last in that stretch saw the Jackets take a 31-18 lead over the perennial power.
But Perry closed strong. The Maroons picked up 12 points with falls at 175 and 190 to get within 31-30 of the Jackets.
Logan Cook’s tech fall at 215 and then Aiden Tetik’s pin at heavyweight sealed the deal.
Prior to the dual, KHS held its homecoming ceremony in which Andrew Takape was named the homecoming captain and Sydnie Toepfer the wrestling homecoming queen.
Once action got started, the Jackets quickly fell behind 12-0.
Both teams forfeited at 10 and then Perry got pins at 113 and 120.
Dexter Fletcher put Kingfisher on the board as he pinned Grant Coker in the second period of their 126-pound match.
That was followed up by Maliki Haynes’ thrilling 13-6 victory over Perry’s Hayden Balderson at 132.
Haynes built a big lead, but then had to outlast Balderson down the stretch.
His victory pulled the Jackets within 12-9.
Perry got six points with a forfeit victory at 138 pounds to go up 18-9.
