Eagles fluster KHS offense
The Weatherford team that visited the APB last Tuesday wasn’t in the same class as the one that’s played in the Class 4A state championship the last three seasons.
But it’s still pretty darn good.
The Eagles put the clamps on Kingfisher’s offense and did enough when they had the ball in their hands to earn a 53-43 road win.
That pushed sixthranked Weatherford, the defending state champ, to an 18-2 record.
KHS dropped its third game out of its last four and moved to 13-6.
The Jackets played most of their three previous games without Hayes White, the team’s second- leading scorer who has been in concussion protocol.
The senior guard made his return against the Eagles, but like the rest of the team, struggled to get going on the offensive end.
KHS scored just 12 points in the first half while shooting 5 of 19 (26.3 percent) from the floor.
Fortunately, Weatherford wasn’t much better early on.
KHS held the Eagles to one field goal and 5 points in the first quarter before Weatherford was able to go on a 14-6 run for a 7-point halftime lead.
Kingfisher’s shooting improved in the second half and the game remained at a seven-point difference entering the fourth.
But Weatherford got 3-pointers from Cash Weiberg on its first two possessions for a 40-27 lead with 6:30 to play.
The Jackets never let Weatherford pull away, but never was able to threaten down the stretch.
Four Eagles scored in double figures, led by Weiberg and Dylan Epp who had 13 apiece.
Cash Laird paced the Jackets with 10 points.
Michael Easley added 9 and Jackson Willbanks 8.
White scored 6 in his return.
