KHS surges in 2nd half to down W’ford
Playing for the second time in a week, Weatherford threw a couple of new wrinkles at Kingfisher in hopes of pulling off the upset.
And it worked. Well, for a little while anyway.
The Lady Eagles slowed Kingfisher’s offense for much of the first half, but KHS eventually woke up to earn a 47-42 victory Tuesday at the APB.
No. 6 Kingfisher beat the ninth-ranked Lady Eagles by 12 the previous Wednesday in the finals of the Buckle of the Wheatbelt Invitational.
In the return match, Weatherford worked hard to deny KHS point guard Mattie Slezickey and forced Kingfisher to run its offense by other means.
The Lady Jackets responded with just four points in the first period and only three field goals in the entire first half.
But Kingfisher’s defense was solid and kept the team in it.
Weatherford was up 5 after a quarter before KHS pulled within 18-17 at halftime.
Abbie Myers’ free throws with 6:49 left in the third tied the game at 21-21. Kingfisher wouldn’t trail again.
Slezickey then buried a 3-pointer at the 3:49 mark to give her team a 24-21 advantage.
The Lady Jackets led the rest of the way.
Kingfisher outscored Weatherford 17-8 in the fourth as Myers scored 10 points in the frame.
She eventually led all scorers with 16 points and also grabbed 13 rebounds.
Her 10th rebound of the night put her at 500 for her career. Myers was honored at halftime of the boys game on Thursday night for her career achievement.
Kingfisher got its lead to double digits in the fourth, but couldn’t pull away.
Talyn Payne made two fourth-quarter treys and Dasia Givens had two field goals to keep the Lady Eagles within striking distance.
KHS went 9 of 13 from the free throw line in the quarter to keep a safe distance.
Reese Roof was 5 of 6 in the quarter and 7 of 8 for the game for all her points.
Ela Hartman was 8 of 10 in the game and scored 14.
Overall, KHS went 24 of 31 from the free throw line while Weatherford attempted just 11.
The win pushed KHS to a 16-3 mark on the season.
