HHS girls stay in winner’s bracket
Hennessey guaranteed its spot in the area tournament with another home win on Tuesday.
The Lady Eagles shut down Holland Hall in the fourth quarter to earn a 4137 victory in their Class 3A regional semifinal at the Eagle Event Center.
That advanced Hennessey into Saturday night’s regional championship at Millwood against the seventh-ranked Lady Falcons. Tipoff is 6 p.m.
Millwood downed Crossings Christian 52-37 on Tuesday.
Hennessey was clinging to a one-point lead entering the fourth quarter, but pushed it to 40-32 with 44 seconds left on a pair of Ally Painter free throws.
Painter scored 7 straight for the Lady Eagles in the quarter while Holland Hall was held scoreless in the fourth until 33 seconds remained.
Painter scored all but 2 of her 9 points in the final quarter.
The Lady Eagles got off to a hot offensive start with a 16-point first quarter.
Star Torres, Emma Copeland and Clare Munroe each made a 3-pointer in the quarter.
The scoring slowed down, but Hennessey maintained its lead much of the night.
Copeland and Munroe each scored 10 for the Lady Eagles, who improved to 21-5 on the season.
Win or lose Saturday, Hennessey will advance to next week’s area tournament at Prague.
Eagles knock out Sperry Hennessey took care of business and kept its season alive for at least one more day.
The Eagles put an end to Sperry’s hapless season on Thursday with an 8952 victory in a Class 3A regional consolation quarterfi nal at the Eagle Event Center.
That advanced Hennessey to Friday’s semifinal against Star-Spencer at Millwood High School (after press time).
Sperry entered the night without a win and it quickly was evident the Pirates would leave that way as well.
The Eagles were up 12-0 less than halfway through the first quarter, prompting a Sperry timeout.
It hardly got much better for the visitors. They were down 26-5 after a quarter and 50-22 by halftime.
Hagen Copeland already had 23 points by half and finished with 34.
Beau Vinson wasn’t far behind as he scored 28 points on the night.
The Eagles will enter Friday’s game with a 10-16 record.
