Piedmont topples KHS 17-16 in tournament’s marathon final

In most cases, 16 runs off 15 hits and eight opponent errors would be more than enough for Kingfisher to comfortably win a baseball game.

Last Saturday was the exception.

Piedmont scored a run off a KHS error with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a wild 17-16 victory over the Jackets in the final of the 2021 Edward Jones Classic.

The final run was the last of seven lead changes as the teams combined for 34 hits and 13 errors in Piedmont.

Brady Friesen twice delivered big hits in the final two innings.

His RBI single in the sixth scored Caleb Dick to put the Jackets up 15-14. Mason Snider had previously tied the game with a sacrifice fly.

After the Wildcats plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth, Friesen’s twoout single scored Dick from second base to extend the game.

Ironically, the teams were scoreless through two innings before KHS was kickstarted in the third by a Cade Stephenson three run home run.

Cole Girard matched it - plus one - in the bottom half with a grand slam as Piedmont took a 5-4 lead.

Ian Daugherty’s tworun double pushed KHS to a 7-5 lead, one it extended to 8-5.

T.J. Parker blasted a three-run shot in the top of the fifth to give the Jackets a 13-7 lead and chase Piedmont starter Jackson Harriger off the mound.

The lead was shortlived as Piedmont struck for seven runs in the fifth. The Wildcats’ first eight batters reached base and they collected six hits before the inning was over.

Dick and Friesen had three hits apiece for the Jackets.

Dick scored three runs while Friesen had two RBIs and two runs.

Stephenson also scored three times.

Tate Taylor and Daugherty both delivered two hits and two runs. Daugherty collected a pair of RBIs.

Mason Snider threw the first 4 1/3 innings for the Jackets.

He gave up 13 hits and seven earned runs.

James Perdue, Cash Slezickey and Slade Snodgrass pitched the final 2 1/3 innings.

The loss was the only one of the tournament for KHS, which hosted half of the pool play games at Homier Field on Thursday and Friday.

On Thursday, the Jackets built a big lead on Elk City before holding on for a 7-6 victory.

A bulk of that lead came in the second inning when Stephenson blasted a grand slam over the left-center field wall.

Stephenson scored again in the fifth on a T.J. Parker RBI groundout for a 6-0 lead.

Two singles, two KHS errors, two hit batters and another walk helped Elk City pull within 6-5 in the sixth inning before Parker came on in relief to get a strikeout to end the inning.

Mason Snider singled in the sixth and later scored on Tate Taylor’s sacrifice bunt for what proved to be a crucial run.

Parker struck out the side in the seventh, but not before the Elks put the goahead run on base.

KHS fell behind Vici by two runs on Friday before storming back for a 12-5 victory.

The storm came in the fifth when KHS plated eight runs.

The Jackets took the lead when Snider beat out a play at first after a Vici error. Two runs scored on the play.

Stephenson later delivered a two-run single for a 9-5 lead.

Noah Friesen’s sacrifice fly to score Daugherty later pushed the Jackets up 12-5.

Meanwhile, Noah Snowden’s arm calmed down Vici’s scoring.

He entered the game in the fourth and gave up just one hit and no runs over the next four innings to earn the win.

Kingfisher followed that up with a 10-0 run rule victory over Guthrie.

Will Taylor threw four innings of one-hit ball for the win. He struck out four.

Tate Taylor and Tate Barton combined for four of Kingfisher’s nine hits.

Taylor had two runs and an RBI while Barton had one of each.

Daugherty crossed home three times.

The Jackets entered this week with a 12-4 overall record.
