About two-thirds of the way through the Class 2A girls state cross country meet last Saturday, Julianne Matousek experienced the slightest bit of deja vu.

As she was making her way down the trail at Carl Albert, her foot got tangled with another runner’s foot and Matousek stumbled.

About five months earlier at the Class 3A state track meet, Matousek was running the final 30 meters of the 800 meter run when she lost her footing and stumbled to the track.

Sporting some road rash, Matousek, then a freshman, recovered and still set a PR.

Back to Saturday, Matousek managed to regain her footing before falling this time.

That helped her earn a spot on the medal stand as the sophomore placed sixth out of 136 runners.

Matousek finished the two-mile run in 12:46.73 and made a big improvement over her freshman season in which she placed 47th.

She was one of four runners from Kingfisher County in the race.

Her teammate Miranda Ortega placed 53rd as she ran the course in 14:33.49.

Cashion’s Hattie Wood just missed out on the medal stand, which goes to the top 15 runners.

Wood placed 17th to end her freshman season and crossed the finish line in 13:16.66.

Her teammate Lyla Sloan was 31st in 13:53.04.

Matousek wasn’t the only county runner to reach the medal stand in Class 2A.

Cashion’s Cole Baustert matched the feat for the boys.

The senior managed the 5K course in 17:43.60 and grabbed the 15th and final spot on the medal stand to make the most of his final race.

Joining him in the race was a trio of Hennessey runners.

Asher Ward was 115th in 21:29.71, Christopher Perez Rodriguez was 129th in 22:28.42 and Rogan Choate finished in 22:57.15 to place 133rd.
