KHS girls still lurking at area

Three down.Two to go.Kingfisher’s girls basketball team won its third elimination game in four days Thursday and sits just two victories shy of a berth in the Class 4A state tournament.The Lady Jackets eliminated Cleveland 45-34 in an area consolation quarterfinal game at Stride Bank Center in Enid.

Of Lomega’s five losses this season, only one was to a Class B team.The Lady Raiders managed to avenge it…but it wasn’t easy.Top-ranked Lomega used a 9-0 run over the final 1:19 Thursday to knock off No. 10 Okeene 64-52 in the Class B state quarterfinals at Mustang High School.

The Lomega boys basketball team saw the magic run out on Monday, but not before it took fans on one wild ride.The Raiders’ season ended with a 37-35 loss to No. 19 Earlsboro in a Class B area consolation semifinal at Stroud.

A long week got a little bit longer for Kingfisher.The Lady Jackets were faced with the task of winning five games in six days if they were going to make their first trip to the state tournament since 2009.

Kingfisher used a 7-0 start to the second quarter and - essentially - a fivepoint play to end it.The parts in between were pretty good, too, as the Yellowjackets made Woodward’s upset bid end in a thud with a 64-38 victory Saturday in a Class 4A regional winner’s bracket game at the APB.

KHS sophomore Browning defeated in state match

Kingfisher’s Gant Browning dropped his lone match at the state wrestling tournament.The sophomore was downed 8-2 by Vinita’s Mark Webb in their wrestle-in match in the 113-pound bracket in Class 3A.

Okarche girls still in hunt

Okarche is in familiar territory.The Lady Warriors now just need one part of history to repeat itself, but not another.Vanoss got 24 points from Madi Faust and was clutch from the free throw line down the stretch in defeating Okarche 53-47 in a Class A area championship at Kellyville.

By its standards, Lomega might have limped into the postseason.Once there, however, the Lady Raiders sprinted to the state tournament.Lomega locked up its 35th appearance at state Monday night with a 58-40 victory against No. 5 Varnum in a Class B area championship at Stroud.
