The Class 3A wrestling regional was nearing its end.Wrestlers were grappling on three mats simultaneously as they were deciding the champion, third place and fifth place winners for each weight class.The wrestlers on the first two mats had already locked up their spot at state.

Thursday was supposed to mark the beginning of the regional basketball tournaments statewide for Classes B, A and 2A.However, Mother Nature decided she had other plans.

Kingfisher will head to the playoffs with twice as many wins as it earned all of last season.The Jackets hit that mark last Friday when they wrapped up their regular season with their most lopsided victory against a varsity squad.They downed Elk City 69-31 to give themselves a 14-9 record.

Kingfisher almost pulled off an improbable comeback.Elk City didn’t let it happen.The Elkettes upset KHS last Friday night with a 4440 victory inside their own Pioneer Center in Elk City.

It was Logan White’s night.The Okarche freshman scored a career-high 21 points Saturday to lead the Lady Warriors to a 50-38 win at home against Cherokee in their Class A district championship game.

Hennessey is riding a three-game win streak into the playoffs after closing off its regular season with victories on Friday and Monday.The latter spoiled Chisholm’s “senior night” festivities as the Lady Eagles used a big third quarter to grab a 50-38 road win.

With the district championship behind them, the Lomega Raiders get their shot at No. 1…for the third time this season.Lomega closed out its Class B district Saturday night with a 78-56 victory at home over Cimarron.It keeps the Raiders in the winner’s bracket heading into this week’s regional.

Cashion got off to a quick start and never looked back in its district title game.The Lady Wildcats remained in the Class 2A winner’s bracket with last Saturday’s 61-24 win over Stroud.They head to Stroud for this week’s regional tournament. They’ll take on a somewhat familiar foe at 6 p.m.

Nothing came easy for Dover on Saturday night.But it did come with a district championship.The Lady Longhorns managed to grind out a 30-27 victory at home over Strother to claim a Class B district crown.The victory advanced Dover to the winner’s bracket of this week’s regional.

A year ago, the Kingfisher High School wrestling team sent five to the state tournament, the most for the program since 2015.As the Yellowjackets prepare to host a Class 3A regional this weekend, coach Steven Wilson hopes his team can duplicate last year’s feat.
