Silver & Bronze

Both of Kingfisher’s girls doubles teams earned medals Thursday in the Hub City Tennis Tournament in Clinton. The No. 1 team of Mia Farrell and Sydney Watkins (top photo) took second place in their bracket while the No. 2 squad of Hope Stafford and Gentry Taylor (bottom photo) took third. It took a third-set tie-breaker for Elk City’s team to defeat Farrell and Watkins in the finals. Kingfisher’s duo won the first set 7-5, but Elk City answered with a 6-3 win in the second. That set up the ultimate tie-breaker, which gives the win to the first team to 10 points. Elk City edged the KHS team in the tie-breaker, 10-8. Farrell and Watkins won their first match over Beaver 6-1, 6-0 and then beat the host Clinton squad 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals. Taylor and Stafford defeated Beaver 6-3, 6-1 in their first match of the day before being knocked off 6-1, 6-0 by Elk City in the semifinals. They rebounded in the third-place match to thump Clinton 6-1, 6-0. Kingfisher’s girls compete Monday in a 4A regional at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center. [Photos provided]
