Lawrence McArther Elliott was born in Lakin, Kan., the youngest of three brothers, to Ralph and Esther (McVey) Elliott on Jan. 18, 1943. He passed away on Feb. 25, 2022, at his home in Loyal.

In 1961, at age 18, Lawrence enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Rainier as a diesel mechanic until 1965. He remained on Naval Reserve status until June 1967. He and Shirley Riegel were married on Aug. 11, 1962, in Clayton, N.M.

After discharging from the Navy, they moved to Napoleon, Mich., where he worked as a machinist until 1968.

Beginning in June 1968, he began a 27-year career in the oil and natural gas industry, eventually settling in Loyal with their two daughters in 1975.

Lawrence retired in June 1995.

Known around the area as “Coondog,” he was an avid outdoorsman enjoying a lifetime of hunting and fishing. He shared those experiences with quite a few, both old and young.

Over the years, he enjoyed various other activities, such as raising dogs, sheep, cattle, horses, chickens and making wine.

He is survived by his daughters: Jody (Bill) Jones of Guthrie and Marlena (Rick) Johnson of Loyal; grandchildren Brok Clason of Cleveland, Sierra and Jaxx Johnson of Loyal, and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and brothers.

Inurnment services will be held at Forrest Home Cemetery in Loyal at a later date. Cremation was under the care of Wilson Funeral Home-Kingfisher.
