Susie Joyce Burnett was born July 29, 1937, in Colbert to Horace and Ruth Johnson Hicks and passed away Friday, July 15, 2022, at the age of 84.

She was a resident of Norman since 1998.

Joyce grew up in Dover and Kingfisher.

She married Ernest Lee “Stubby” Burnett on March 4, 1953. They moved to Watonga in 1963.

She worked for Pioneer Telephone Cooperative for 37 years, first as an operator in Kingfisher then head cashier in Watonga before transferring back to Kingfisher to sell pagers, which she thoroughly enjoyed.

Joyce also worked parttime at the City Pharmacy in Watonga for GL Alexander.

She helped open and run Stubby’s 7-11, which went on to become the first Love’s Convenience Store.

After retirement, she worked with her daughter Kelli at BMI-ImageNet Consulting part-time.

Joyce loved to garden.

She loved dogs. She had several Yorkies, but her latest Yorkie puppy, Mellie, was her pride and joy.

Joyce was an excellent cook and loved to cook for her family. She always baked a cake for everyone’s birthday.

She spent hours every Christmas baking candy and bread for all her friends and family.

Joyce loved her grandkids. She took care of them after she retired.

Joyce was very active. In her younger years, she taught three of her grandchildren how to water ski in one afternoon at Canton Lake where she and Stubby went camping nearly every weekend in their camper.

Everyone was always welcome in her home. If there was an extra person for Thanksgiving dinner, anytime, there was always room for more.

She will be remembered for the love she shared with her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Horace, and Ruth Hicks; her aunt Ruby and uncle Manford Ingle, who raised her; three brothers, Marvin, Jim and Wes Hicks; one sister, Faye Stafford; and one cousin who was like a sister to Joyce, Gladys Ellyson; father- and mother-in-law Ernest and Daisy Burnett; and her son Paul Mark Burnett.
