Verlena Selby

Verlena Weaver Selby, 102, of Kingfisher, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023.

Graveside services will be held at Kingfisher Cemetery at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, under the direction of Sanders Funeral Service with Rev. Dr. Jennifer Long officiating. VerlenawasbornonOctober 20, 1920 in a sod dugout in Jordan, Mont., where her parents were homesteading property.

Her parents, Joel Tanner Weaver and Orpha Leona Weaver, moved back to Kingfisher where Verlena attended Gant School and Kingfisher High School until the middle of her senior year.

Verlena moved to Arkansas where her parents were living then and she graduated from Alma (Ark.) High School in 1938. Verlena met Raymond Selby shortly after arriving in Arkansas.

While Raymond was serving in the Army, Verlena worked as a nanny/ childcare worker both in Arkansas and Oklahoma.

She married Raymond on July 20, 1941, in Kingfi sher and returned to Kingfi sher when Raymond left to serve in the Army overseas during WWII.

Together they opened a business in Kingfisher in 1945: Selby Radio then Selby Radio and TV.

They operated that business together for 50 years.

Verlena and Raymond enjoyed traveling in their van, equipped with Ray’s amateur ham radio gear, to locations where their children lived.

Most importantly, they were always partners in love and life.

Verlena was a working mom, but still managed to be active in the school and church life of her children.

She was a member of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution and a lifetime member of the Kingfisher First United Methodist Church.

She loved making crafts of many types; needlework and ceramics were her favorites.

Survivors include three children, David Selby and wife Nancy of Oklahoma City, Martha Selby of Mission Viejo, Calif., and Robert Steven Selby of Forney, Texas; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Verlena was preceded in death by her husband Raymond, her parents, her four siblings and their spouses.
