East Central ends Okarche win streak at TOC
Okarche’s 51-game win streak came to a halt Monday in Tulsa.
The Warriors were downed 82-69 by Class 5A’s Tulsa East Central in the opening round of the Tournament of Champions at the BOK Center.
A furious first quarter saw the Warriors lead by as many as 12 points and they were up 30-24 by the time it ended.
However, Okarche couldn’t keep up the scoring pace the rest of the game.
“We were trying,” coach Aaron West said as Okarche dipped to 10-1 on the season. “We got a little tired for about three minutes in the second quarter and that allowed them to get a little momentum.”
East Central took advantage to outscore Okarche and pull within a point at halftime.
That momentum carried over into the second half as the Cardinals held Okarche to just 25 points.
The Cardinals were up six going into the fourth and Okarche was still within striking distance most of the fourth quarter, but couldn’t catch up.
“We battled and gave it our all,” West said.
A big part of Okarche’s fast start was due to Jett Mueggenborg and Easton Roby.
Both scored 13 points in that first quarter.
Roby finished the game with 28 points and 9 rebounds. He was 12 of 16 from the field and made all three of his 3-point attempts.
Mueggenborg also kept it up as he scored 27 on the night and led the team with 10 boards.
The only other Warrior to approach double digits was Ethan Kirby with his 8 points.
Outside of Roby, the Warriors were just 4 of 24 from 3-point range.
Another big part of Okarche’s game is turning over opponents and turning those into points.
East Central held up to Okarche’s pressure and had just 12 miscues.
Meanwhile, Okarche had 17 turnovers which led to 26 points for the turnovers.
The Cardinals had three primary scorers led by Caden Montgomery’s 29 points. He was 4 of 8 from long range and 11 of 19 overall. He also had 7 assists.
David Douglas poured in 18 points on 9 of 11 shooting while Ricky Bruner III chipped in 16.
The Cardinals shot 50.7 percent (34 of 67) while Okarche was limited to 41.3 (26 of 63).
The loss was Okarche’s first since Feb. 1, 2024. The Warriors won the rest of their games that season en route to a state title and went 32-0 last year for backto- back titles.
They played Owasso in Tuesday’s consolation semifinals after press time of this edition. The 6A Rams were knocked off by 4A Cascia Hall in their opener.
