Boomers pressure Jackets into Tuesday loss
A disastrous start to the third quarter led to Kingfi sher’s downfall Tuesday and saw the Jackets’ win streak come to an end.
KHS succumbed to Woodward’s pressure and saw an eight-point halftime lead turn into a 75-67 defeat at Boomer Fieldhouse.
The win snapped Kingfisher’s three-game win streak as the Jackets fell to 16-7 with one game left in the regular season.
The Jackets closed the first half on a 10-2 run to stake a 33-25 lead against the Boomers.
Whatever momentum was taken into the locker room didn’t emerge as Woodward’s full-court pressure baffled the Jackets.
The home team quickly burst into a 13-2 run.
Kingfisher ultimately turned it over eight times in the quarter.
The biggest beneficiary was Cole Reid, who scored 10 points in the frame, mostly on bumps off the glass straight off a Jacket miscue.
Kingfisher’s lead became a three-point deficit by the end of the quarter and the Jackets couldn’t rally.
Cash Laird did his best with 7 of his 19 points in the fourth, but Woodward matched its third quarter production with another 25-point quarter.
The Boomers went 13 of 15 from the line to help keep their distance.
Kadon Gaines was 6 of 8 and scored 8 of his gamehigh 23 in the fourth.
Reid scored 18 before fouling out and Jake Graf came off the bench to score 10 for Woodward, which beat the Jackets for the second time this season.
The first time around, Kingfisher didn’t have Hayes White.
He was making up for lost time in the first half.
The senior guard scored 11 in the first quarter and 15 in the first half.
He made two first-quarter treys as did Cash Laird. The Jackets didn’t make another 3-pointer until they were down double digits in the fourth.
They didn’t need the long ball in the second as they put 16 points on the board.
White, Michael Easley and Jackson Willbanks had two field goals each in the frame.
White joined Laird in scoring 19 for the Jackets while Willbanks poured in a season-high 13.
Kingfisher shot 53.5 percent for the game (Woodward had a 54.7 percent clip), but ultimately turnovers did in the Jackets.
Their 22 miscues led to 28 Woodward points.
It was Kingfisher’s second long road trip in as many nights.
The Jackets beat Cache 63-48 on Monday in a makeup game that was originally scheduled for Jan. 27, but postponed due to snow.
The Bulldogs upset No. 7 Blanchard in their most previous game, but Kingfi sher pieced together four straight quarters of double- digit scoring.
White again was part of the big start as he scored 10 in the first half.
Seven different Jackets scored in the first two quarters.
White scored 17 in the game.
Easley picked up his pace in the second half when he scored 11 of his 15 points.
The Jackets also got 12 points from Laird.
Cache’s leading scorer this season, Jacob Woommavouah, had two 3-pointers and 10 points in the first half.
The Jackets limited him to no field goals and just two points in the second half and he was the lone Bulldog to reach double figures.
That was Kingfisher’s 16th win of the season, which matched last year’s win total.
