Goodwin has big night as Lady Longhorn upset bid falls short; Dover boys remain undefeated
Dover’s comeback attempt on Tuesday night fell short despite a tremendous scoring performance from Remi Goodwin.
The Lady Longhorns pulled even with Union City in the fourth quarter, but ultimately suffered the fate of a 48-41 loss on the road.
The loss was Dover’s third straight as the Lady Longhorns dropped to 4-13 on the season.
Union City entered with a three-game win streak that included the Mulhall-Orlando Invitational championship three days before.
The Tigers jumped on Dover in the first half to build a 25-15 lead.
But Dover began to claw back in the second half.
Goodwin scored 8 in the third quarter as Dover pulled within 8 points.
Eventually Dover was able to tie the game at 41-41 before the home team scored the final 7 points.
The Tigers went 7 of 10 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter and got a team-high 15 points from Mariah Ailey.
She was one of three Union City players in double figures.
Dover only had one in Goodwin.
She was part of the big surge in the fourth quarter with her 10 points.
The freshman ended her night with 29.
Dover also got 9 from Presley Squires.
The two combined for all five of the Lady Longhorns’ 3-pointers with Goodwin knocking down three of them.
No Tuesday letdown
The Tuesday game after a Saturday championship always worries coaches.
Especially when they’re on the road.
That was the situation facing Jared Reese and his Class B-II top-ranked Dover Longhorns last week as they were set to visit Union City.
“Their record may not jump out at you, but some of their scores told you that you have to take them seriously,” said Reese of the Tigers, who entered the game 8-8.
Although they may not have looked their best, Reese’s Longhorns did take Union City serious enough in a 55-23 win.
“It wasn’t a great performance,” he said of Dover, which outscored its host in every quarter. “We looked really tired.”
Casen Buck looked perfectly fine as the junior had 15 points in the first half to lead the Longhorns to a 28-14 lead.
He didn’t score in the third, but A.J. Avila and Daxx Compton combined for 9 points as the Longhorns went on an 11-2 run to extend their lead further.
Buck picked it back up with 7 more points in the fourth to lead the Longhorns with 23. He was 9 of 15 from the field, including 3 of 6 from long range.
Compton finished with 13 points and 4 assists.
Avila scored 8 overall. Union City had no players reach double figures as Dover pushed its season record to 17-0.
