Offensive display
Warriors put on a show against reigning Class B champ
The showdown between reigning state champs and current title contenders was decidedly one-sided.
Class A No. 1 Okarche flexed its muscle Tuesday and put on an offensive display rarely seen with a 117-68 thrashing of visiting Calumet.
The Chieftains won Class B a season ago and with a majority of that roster back, currently is ranked No. 2 in Class B-I.
And offensively they were good.
Calumet scored 21 in the first quarter, 41 in the opening half and was sitting at 60 through three quarters.
However, with each quarter, the visitors’ deficit grew increasingly insurmountable.
That’s because the Warriors were busy shooting 54 percent from the floor, a number that included 24 of 49 (49 percent) from 3-point range.
“24 of 49 from 3 is crazy,” said Okarche coach Aaron West after his team improved to 20-3.
Leading that shooting barrage was left-handed senior Jett Mueggenborg.
He was 7 of 10 from long range.
Court Sumrall came off the bench to nail half of his 12 attempts.
Ethan Kirby knocked down five 3-pointers, Kysen Avila had three and Easton Roby two more.
That plus the Warriors’ pace of play led them to scoring 35 in the first quarter for a 14-point lead.
They were up 63-41 at the half and had scored 84 points through three quarters.
Despite shooting 59.2 percent for the game, Calumet just couldn’t keep up.
The Chieftains made 29 of 49 attempts. Okarche was 43 of 80.
The extra shots were attributed to Calumet’s 27 turnovers. Those led to 41 Warrior points.
And although the Chieftains shot well inside the arc, they were only 2 of 10 outside of it.
In falling to 19-3 on the season, Calumet was led by Brendon Voss, who scored 26 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
Talon Arnold chipped in 14 points.
Mueggenborg kept up his torrid scoring pace - and his march toward becoming the school’s alltime scorer - as he poured in 34 points. Mueggenborg dished it out as well, finishing with 11 assists and also had 6 rebounds.
Sumrall’s shooting display netted him 18 points.
Kirby scored 17, Avila had 15 points and Roby finished with 14.
Lady Warriors kickstart sweep
Callie Cramer and Logan White combined for 31 points as Okarche downed one of Class B-I’s topranked teams. The Lady Warriors held Calumet to 35 percent shooting Tuesday and downed the Lady Chieftains 56-36.
Okarche moved to 17-4 and won for the seventh time in eight games.
The home team shot nearly 50 percent, which included going 7 of 15 from 3-point range.
Cramer was 3 of 6 on her 3-point attempts and scored 15 to go with her 8 rebounds.
Okarche led by four after a quarter, then went on a 17-5 run in the second.
Calumet couldn’t make a second-half charge.
White did her part by knocking down 8 of 9 field goal attempts and led the way with 1.
Ally Baustert and Katie Parham scored 7 apiece.
Calumet, ranked sixth in its class, was led by freshman Hayden Mayfi eld’s 18 points.
