Roof, Myers lead Lady Jackets
Seniors step up big as KHS knocks off Howe to open Mid-America Classic
A dominant fourth quarter pushed Kingfisher into the semifinals of the Bertha Teague Mid-America Classic.
The Lady Jackets outscored Howe 18-5 in the fourth quarter Monday to earn a 54-44 come-from-behind win in the first game of the 48th edition of the tournament at East Central University’s Kerr Activity Center.
After twice leading by double digits in the game, Howe went up 39-30 with 55 seconds left in the third quarter on Brilee Scarberry’s driving bucket.
That gave Scarberry 13 points, but her production - and Howe’s along with it - dropped considerably for the rest of the game.
Kingfisher’s Reese Roof immediately answered with a 3-pointer and then made another just before the end of the quarter to bring the Lady Jackets within 3.
Those treys were the fifth and sixth of the game for Roof, all in the second and third quarters.
She scored all of her game-high 19 points in those frames and she continually kept the Lady Lions from pulling away.
Through three quarters, Roof had more than half of her team’s points.
Her teammates picked up the slack down the stretch.
The Lady Jackets had the game tied up with 7:10 to play when Lily Voth grabbed a steal and layup.
Ela Hartman then put KHS up 44-42 with 5:55 left and Kingfisher didn’t look back.
Abbie Myers followed with her own bucket..and then another…and then another.
She scored 10 points in the fourth as Kingfisher held onto, then extended its lead.
The Lady Jackets also went 6 of 6 from the free throw line as Myers, Hartman and Mattie Slezickey each went 2 for 2.
Meanwhile, Howe struggled to score in the fourth.
The Lady Lions committed 21 turnovers in the game.
That included 15 Kingfi sher steals, 7 of them by Slezickey to go with her 7 points.
She joined Hartman in handing out a team-high 4 assists.
Myers ended her night with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Hartman scored 10. Getting anyone in double digits appeared as if it may be a struggle early on.
Kingfisher fell behind 9-0 early and didn’t score until Taitym Walker drained a long 2-pointer near the midpoint of the first quarter.
KHS was down 15-8 after a quarter and had yet to make a 3-pointer.
The Lady Jackets made four in the second, including three by Roof.
Two of them came as part of an 8-0 run by the Lady Jackets to take a 16-15 lead at 5:55 of the quarter.
Howe answered with a 12-0 spurt of its own before Slezickey’s trey at 2:03 made it 27-19.
That was part of another 8-0 run by Kingfisher to close the half.
Roof then scored 10 of Kingfisher’s 12 in the third quarter as Howe again got a double-digit lead before it was trimmed to three.
Scarberry led Howe, ranked second in Class 2A, with her 13 points.
KHS improved to 6-2 with the win. The Lady Jackets were set to take on Class 3A’s Keys in the semifinals. Keys knocked off Merritt 49-41 in their quarterfinal game.
Merritt had earlier defeated KHS 59-50 in the Lady Jackets’ season opener.
