Waukomis tops Dover in Skeltur title game

Dover can still accomplish a lot this season.

An undefeated record won’t be among them.

That potential was dashed by Waukomis last Friday as the Chiefs toppled the Longhorns 55-39 in the finals of the Skeltur Conference Tournament at Pioneer.

The defeat was Dover’s first as it fell to 20-1. Waukomis, ranked 10th in Class A, avenged its lone loss of the season as it fell to Dover 69-60 at home on Dec. 2.

Like the first time they played, the Chiefs took it to Dover early and led 12-7 after a quarter.

Unlike the first time, Dover didn’t respond...at least not quickly enough.

Waukomis held Dover scoreless in the second and led 28-7 at the break. The lead grew to as much as 34-7 before Dover finally came alive in the third quarter.

The Longhorns made five 3-pointers - two each by Daxx Compton and Casen Buck - and got their deficit to single digits.

However, Waukomis survived the barrage and pulled away late to move to 17-1 on the season and win its first conference tournament since 1991.

Dover got 15 points from Compton and 14 from Buck while A.J. Avila scored 7.

Colt Simunek led Waukomis with 27 points.

Waukomis has the two highest scoring outputs against Dover’s defense this season. No other team has scored more than 39 against Class B-II’s top-rated team.
