CITY AND SCHOOL issues dominated the first Kingfisher County Republican Women luncheon of 2020 last week. Kingfisher school board candidates Susannah Copeland, Servrina Prim, first and second from left, and incumbent Carly Franks, far right, introduced themselves.

The Oklahoma Scholarship Competition provides an opportunity for Oklahoma high school students to earn cash scholarships and tuition grants for college. With at least 19 scholarships in each county available, students compete based on their knowledge of Oklahoma history, its people and geography.

Flu season has officially arrived in Oklahoma. While there have been flu cases treated locally, the disease hasn’t reached epidemic proportions and there appears to be sufficient vaccine available to inoculate residents wanting to safeguard themselves against the virus.

Rain fell across Kingfisher County and a section of the state running from Copan in the Northeast to a broad section of southwest Oklahoma from the Tipton-Altus area to Waurika. Kingfisher Weather Observer Steve Loftis recorded .

Kingfisher High School seniors McCall Sinclair, Jonathan Rios, Wes Hine and Jon Henry were guests last week of the Kingfi sher Rotary Club. Sinclair is the son of Mariah Sinclair. He’s active in track, cross country and the Student Careers Council.

Kingfisher County Extension began hosting an exercise program last week on “Walking with Ease” that will continue for another five weeks. The free classes are held at 10 a.m. each Tuesday and Thursday through Feb. 20 at the Kingfisher County Fairgrounds Exhibit Building.

The Hennessey Farmerettes OHCE met Jan. 9 in the home of Dot Miller for its first meeting of the new year. Billie Melendy, president, called the meeting to order and led the flag salute. Susan Engle was introduced and welcomed as a new member.

Katie Soudek of Kingfi sher, a 2017 honor graduate of Hennessey High School, was named to the Dean’s Honor Roll for the recently completed fall semester at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Soudek is a junior psychology/ neuroscience major with a 3.75 GPA.

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas criticizes former Vice President Joe Biden’s stewardship of his 1991 Senate confi rmation hearings in a forthcoming documentary called “Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words.
