Dover made a statement with its legs on Saturday as the Longhorns won the team title at the Class A Pre-State Meet.

Fifth-ranked Dover edged No. 2 - and defending state champ - Laverne by two points and No. 4 Oklahoma Bible Academy by 19 in the meet held at Carl Albert, the site of the state meet next month.

For the first time this season, the Longhorns’ Bly Frieouf wasn’t the first runner to cross the finish line.

Laverne senior Gentry Long won the individual medal with a time of 16:11.01 in the 5K race.

Frieouf was second in 16:41.78.

Frieouf won last year’s individual state title at Medford while Long was second and led the Tigers to the team crown.

For the Longhorns, Reid Frieouf was ninth and Brady Reese 14th to give them three medalists.

Rounding out their scoring were Nick Spradlin, who placed 18th, and Kyler Williams, who was 28th, giving the team 67 points.

Dover was without one of its regular scoring runners in Brok Cooper, who didn’t make the meet due to baseball.

Laverne had Andres Sanchez place seventh, Diego Perez 14th, Jose Soto 20th and Jafet Garcia 27th.

The Tigers finished with 69.

OBA wasn’t far back with its 86 points.

Once Class A gets to regional and state competitions, only the top four runners’ places will count toward the team total.

Using that format, Dover would have scored 39 points, Laverne would have finished with 42 and OBA with 60 at the prestate meet.

In its last two meets, both won by Dover, the Longhorns have beaten the teams currently ranked second, third (Southwest Covenant) and fourth.

Regent Prep is the current No. 1 team in the class.
