The final standing was disappointing.The effort was not.Kingfisher High School took seventh last Saturday in the Class 4A girls state cross country meet at Edmond Santa Fe.The Lady Jackets started the season with high aspirations and entered state ranked fifth.

Kingfisher had two ways it could respond in the second half at Heritage Hall.Down big, the Jackets could pack it in and limp into Week 10 or they could show some fight and salvage something on the Chargers’ Oklahoma City campus.They chose the latter.

Halloween means trick-or-treating for most people in Oklahoma.For small-school basketball teams and coaches… Oct. 31 is also basketball season eve...or at least close.Nov. 1 is annually the date non-football playing schools can start their basketball seasons.

Ulysses High School in Kansas got a dose of what Oklahoma teams have been dealing with for years.Cashion rolled up 494 yards of offense in a 34- 13 win over the Tigers at Ranger Field on the campus of Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva.

Three Kingfisher County teams - outside of the Kingfisher girls - and three more individuals from county schools have advanced to this weekend’s state cross country meets.Lomega has landed both squads at state after last weekend’s 2A regional at Waurika.

Kingfisher won’t be going into the state cross country meet as a regional champ like last year - not even the runner-up - but coach Kerri Lafferty knows the final week still offers a chance to improve.She’s counting on it.KHS took third place last Saturday at the 4A regional held in Enid.
