Okarche High School and junior high cheer squads participated in cheer camp Aug. 2- 6 to prepare for the 2021-22 cheer season. The camp was held at the Okarche High School gymnasium with UCA cheer instructor Karmeishie Bray and cheer coaches Kristie Harris and Jaci Geheb.

Drew Henderson pulled off the improbable last weekend in winning his first Kingfisher Golf Association club championship. Henderson erased a two-stroke deficit with two holes to play, then birdied the first playoff hole Sunday to knock off two-time defending champion Heath Myers for the crown.

Kingfisher won its softball season opener last Monday, but dropped to 0-1 in its district the next night. The Lady Jackets dropped Okarche 9-1 at home to start the 2021 campaign, despite managing just four hits.

Over the years – over the decades – Kris Webb and Kevin Farr have seen “some dudes” on the diamond. Farr has been involved with summer baseball for 30 years, the last 20-plus with the Woodward Travelers. Webb is a Travelers alum.

Bijan Cortes and Matthew Stone had one more basketball game as teammates. And, just like nearly every other, they won.

It was a proud night for yours truly when I attended last Saturday’s Oklahoma Coaches Association Hall of Fame Banquet in Tulsa. The banquet is annually the kickoff event for the All-State games and coaches’ clinics that take place over the following week.

Do things the right way. Even before he became the winningest football coach in Kingfisher High School history, Jeff Myers lived that creed.

When you cover the six Kingfisher County schools and Crescent and the tradition-rich programs some of them have possessed over the course of 20-plus years, you’re going to come across some great players.

Four county teams will be vying for OK Kids baseball state championships this week. The Kingfisher Blue Sox and Okarche Warriors will be taking part in the 10-under tournament at Sallisaw. The 12-under bracket at Weatherford will feature the Kingfisher Yellowjackets and the Hennessey Eagles.

Several winners - and their turtles - emerged victorious during the annual turtle races hosted by the Kingfisher Lions Club. The races were a part of the Fourth of July festivities at Kingfisher Park, which were staged July 3 this year.
