Crescent avenges previous losses with War on 74 sweep
Crescent’s massive comeback against Cashion helped the Tigers avenge an earlier lopsided loss to its War on 74 rivals.
Parker Mitchell’s jumper in the lane with time running out missed off the back iron as the Tigers held on for a 50-49 overtime victory at home.
Cashion had thumped Crescent 63-38 just under a week before in the consolation championship of the Three Rivers Conference Tournament.
This contest appeared headed in much the same direction when the visitors outscored Crescent 13-4 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 36-19.
But this time Crescent came storming back and had the lead with under a minute to play.
Mitchell drew a foul with 34 seconds to play in regulation and his team down a point.
The senior missed his first attempt, but tied the game at 44-all by making his second.
Crescent held for the final shot, but missed two attempts in the closing seconds.
It took a couple of minutes before either team scored in overtime, but Travis Wolfe drilled a 3-pointer about midway through to give the Tigers a 50-47 advantage.
Mitchell answered right back with a driving bucket just seconds later, but his shot with 1:50 to play in the extra frame proved to be the final points for either team.
Mitchell dribbled out the final seconds before driving to the lane and pulling up for the would-be game winner.
Time expired before either team could grab the long rebound.
Mitchell scored 24 for Cashion, which fell to 9-5 overall.
Kyle Yowell added 9 points.
Lady Wildcats fall
A bout of sickness and a bit of foul trouble proved too much for Cashion to overcome.
The Lady Wildcats fell to 9-5 on Friday night with a 49-35 loss at rival Crescent.
It was Cashion’s third loss in four games, but each of those previous three contests was against a ranked foe.
The last time Cashion didn’t have an opponent that was ranked was against Crescent in the semifinals of the conference tournament.
Cashion won that game 61-18.
But the Lady Tigers were able to slow the pace considerably in the rematch and never allowed Cashion to score more than 11 points in a quarter.
Trinity Webster handled a bulk of the scoring for the home team as she poured in 21 points.
Cashion was led by Kate Nabavi’s 12.
Brooke Shafer added 10 points while Jaylee Harp scored 8.
