Kyle Clutch
Yowell’s OT treys lift Cashion to thrilling victory at Fairview
When they needed him most, Kyle Yowell was clutch.
The Cashion senior buried two corner 3-pointers in the final moments of overtime to help the Wildcats prevail 59-56 Tuesday night at Fairview.
Yowell’s first big trey came with 1:05 to go in the extra period and turned a one-point Cashion deficit into a 55-54 lead.
After Fairview’s Noah Schmidt answered with a jumper in the paint to give his team a one-point advantage with 40 seconds to go, Yowell struck again.
This one came with 25 seconds remaining - from almost exactly the same spot - and put Cashion on top for good, 58-56.
There was still work to be done on the defensive end.
King Underwood stepped up there and swatted a would-be game-tying shot in the lane.
Parker Mitchell ran down the ball before it went out of bounds, setting up a free throw by Brayden Stuemky to push it to a three-point game.
Fairview’s last-second 3-pointer to tie missed the mark.
Stuemky had the opportunity to make it a two-possession lead for Cashion with 16 seconds remaining in regulation.
He was sent to the line with a 50-48 lead, but missed both attempts.
That set up the drama to close out regulation as Fairview’s Haddon Miller went end-to-end and scored while being fouled.
His basket tied the game at 50-50 with just seconds remaining, but missed the go-ahead free throw.
The Yellowjackets got another opportunity near the end of regulation, but missed.
The home team took a 54-50 lead in overtime before Mitchell’s jumper brought Cashion within 5452 with 2:00 to go.
Yowell’s first overtime trey came after a Fairview turnover.
The late 3-pointers were just part of a big night that saw him score 20 points, which included making 3 of 7 3-pointers.
Stuemky struggled at the line - making just 1 of 6 - but was excellent from long range. He nailed 4 of 9 3-point attempts and scored 15.
Mitchell scored 12 and had 7 rebounds.
That was an area Cashion dominated with 38 boards to Fairview’s 25.
Grayson Little had 8 rebounds to go with his 8 points.
Stuemky and Underwood also grabbed 7 boards each.
Miller paced Fairview with 17 points.
Both teams saw their regular season record move to 12-6. Cashion is now 2-1 in Three Rivers Conference games.
Fairview girls continue hot streak
Few teams can claim to be as hot as the Fairview Lady Jackets.
They entered Tuesday night’s home game with a 12-game win streak that included the Three Rivers Conference Tournament championship and, most recently, a 15-point win over 2A No. 1 Dale on a neutral court.
That momentum continued against visiting Cashion as 2A’s seventh-ranked Fairview moved to 16-2 on the season with a 65-43 win.
Cashion’s loss dropped it to 12-7 on the season.
Fairview took care of business early as it got out to a 22-6 lead in the first quarter.
The advantage grew to 21 by halftime.
Four Lady Jackets reached double figures, led by Jaycee Young’s 16 points.
Brooke Shafer paced the Lady Wildcats with 18 points. Kate Nabavi chipped in 11.
